one of my boys checking out my bridge and creek
one of my boys checking out my bridge and creek
Here's what my bridge and creek looked like this morning. Drove up the canyon and the reservoir is full but with the heat wave we've had all July I doubt there's much or any snow pack left. Could hear some water in the creek a couple miles up the road so maybe will be a little water here later on. We're about the last users so it's been going down when people get home from work, but now it's been dry since Friday afternoon. Been hand watering a little with well water but don't want to run it dry. Hope this isn't the new normal.

What is that a mountain lion ? About like my creek!
Re: one of my boys checking out my bridge and creek
That's Zippo, a very friendly stray I feed. Up until a few years ago he would show up every week or so all torn up. Got him fixed and now he rarely leaves the property. Mostly hangs out on the deck or follows me around hoping for some pets and ear scratches.
Most years our creek has decent flow, I've been here since '85 and it's only gone dry a couple of years and not this early. It's gets it water from the Mission Ridge Ski area so is usually pretty dependable. It had decent snowfall last Winter but we had barely any Spring rainfall and a warmer than usual Spring.

Hadn't thought about it for a long time but went by the Boy Scout camp down the road from the reservoir and it reminded me of Propman. A B-24 crashed into the top of ridge (the area where it crashed is right on one of the ski runs and is called "Bomber's Bowl" in 1944 and the story goes that one of the crew ended up impaled with a piece of prop and somehow survived it and has been wandering around ever since. They would tell the story and other ghost stories and then make you go out in the dark and ring a big bell that was about a half mile from the cabin.

Zippo…. A great name for the cat but an even better name for your creek.
Re: one of my boys checking out my bridge and creek
Squilchuck is the name of the creek, in Chinook, "squilchuc"' means "muddy water." It's true, when it rains hard it becomes very muddy and the water is never really clear.
Zippo is a good name for the creek right now as in "no water"

Re: one of my boys checking out my bridge and creek
I just happened to purchase a trail cam two days ago. Been wanting one for a while now and so
I made the plunge. Well the neighbor lady lost her cat a week ago. Now here deep in the woods that's a big
deal with coyotes, foxes, and racoons running around all night, so she has been in tears for a few
days now. She's had the kitty for sixteen years and it was like a child to her.
So I mounted the trail cam on a tree in front of the house and when I looked at the pictures this
afternoon, low and behold her little kitty comes walking through our yard about 12:15 AM along
with a family of raccoons. The raccoons came a few minutes later.
Anyway I called her and she asked if she could come over and see it was her cat. Now I thought she'd
drive as it's half a mile out to the service road and another half a mile in to our house, but nope, she
ran through the woods and brush. She was all out of breath and had tears because it was her cat indeed
on the trail cam. She thinks it may be disoriented and lost. She left searching the woods.
I put the trail cam back up. At least I made someone happy today. I hope she finds her kitty.

While at the range today I got the hand rails up. My range buddy Ace takes a walk across and water is flowing again in the creek!

Looks great!
Re: one of my boys checking out my bridge and creek
We also got some water flowing in the creek starting Saturday morning, not a lot but enough to run a few sprinklers and still have some water left in the creek. Was able to get most everything watered before it died, hopefully it will not go completely dry again this summerfortyshooter wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 10:13 pmWhile at the range today I got the hand rails up. We were gone to a Blue Grass concert Thursday through Sunday. While we were gone she surveilled our front yard and on Saturday night, or rather early Sunday morning, she got her cat back. She said it came strolling into the yard and she picked it up and showed it to the game camera. One happy woman.
