Old Timers Day

Headed out to the range today with two old timers that have been sitting in the safe for a long time. I decided it was time to do some rimfire shooting so I took out my High Standard 106 Supermatic Trophy and Remington 550-1. Both of these firearms are circa 1966. The Remington was my first rifle and I bought it from a college friend sometime in 1968. The High Standard I purchased from a club member in 1983 when I was doing bullseye shooting.

My first job was to zero in the Weaver 3-7 power scope that I just remounted at many many years. The target below was at 25 yds.

Once I was happy with the zero I moved the target back to 50 yds. and fired the group below. The one flyer in the 7 ring was all me.

Once I was happy with the 550-1 performance I switched to the High Standard. I had to relearn the trigger on that gun again. My first few shots went off so early because I haven't shot that pistol in so long. I did find out that neither gun liked either Remington 40 gr. ammo I had and bot produced very poor groups. The I switched to some Winchester 36 gr. and both shot very well.

Overall even though it was 90 F out and about 70% humidity, I still had a great day.

Isnt it funny how me can really make those groups grow. That me needs to get lost when Im shooting but I cant seem to get rid of him. Nice shooting Paul even if me tried to help.

My hubby inherited a Remington 550-1 from his father and we still have it. It's an older vintage than yours, circa late 40s and does not have a grooved receiver, so no scope. During some of the past ammo shortages, we used it to shoot some 22 Longs and 22 Shorts we had on hand, because the 550-1 is one of the few semi-autos that can cycle LR, L, and Shorts. Pretty decent accuracy, too.

Love that HS. I've had a few Trophy versions over the years and loved the triggers, but, yeah, definitely light match triggers so it usually took a few shots to get back in the groove with them.

Very nice. Saw a few of the high standards on the line when shooting bullseye matches back in the day during my time on active duty. Old Marines, Old Guns, ruling the firing line.

I was young once. I shot bullseye... Not well back then.
