My old Nikon Coolpix P530 broke against the granite of Mount Stuart two years ago. I was going to replace it this spring and then covid hit.

Fast forward to today and I’m looking at the Nikon P1000. That and a W100Y so I don’t break the 1000 on another mountain. I will also want a studio camera with a good lens but otherwise plain. A game camera. And then finally a laptop, notebook or pad or something to have a master storage place.

At the same time I’m looking into lighting and camera booms.

That is quite a list for Santa! I'd love to see the P1000 zoom feature. It looks like an intuitive camera that would provide professional quality that doesn't break the bank, and it has very good reviews too. It would also make one heck of a spotting scope for the range What other's have you looked into?

I looked at others but since I had already owned a Coolpix I decided to go with it again. The 530 had a zoom almost as powerful. I would often use it as a spotting scope. It worked best to take a picture and view the picture instead of trying to hold the camera still.

I ended up with the P950 and the W300Y. The 1000 was about 30% bigger than the 950 and seemed too big. The 300 will be my ‘it’s rained for the tenth day in a row’ camera as it is waterproof to 100 feet and you can drop it without it breaking.

Tomorrow I shop for a computer of some sort.

I’m beginning to think what have I done! The lower left is the old camera which I thought was big. The new one seems huge. I was reading the stats and the 1000 is 40% heavier than the 950. It was much bigger too. Over twice the size of the old one. More like three or four times as big.

This is the reason for a new camera. I smashed into granite on Stuart summer of 2019.

But that camera can reach out for miles with an optical Nikon lens. A bit of optical magic. Very cool.

I would've liked to see and hold a P1000, but there are no camera shops left in my neck of Iowa...sad. The big box stores stores were empty too. Youtube vids and product reviews was what I had to use for resources. Based on mostly positive reviews and how I plan to use it, I decided to order the P1000 today. It does look big and a hefty 3 lbs!

I saw a review on Amazon where the P1000 captured a picture of the Space Station during orbit, talk about perfect timing! I've always wanted to put together a calendar of outdoor images of wildlife and farm scenes from our state. I think the P1000 will fit the need, at least it isn't as heavy as my 45-70!

We don't have as many aggregates to watch for here, but if I use it on the boat, I probably should get it a life jacket!

Let me know how you like it. What I like about the 950 is that I already know how it operates. Very similar to my P530 and even an older Cannon. The photo industry likes to keep things the same.

I played with mine half the night. I need to be able to quickly change from shutter priority to aperture without thinking. The 950 seems to function just like a 35mm SLR in that regard but also has other options.

What do you use for a camera case or bag? I'm considering a Case Logic SLRC-201, hope it will fit!

I use a case for general transport but not when I’m on a shoot. Currently I don’t have anything for the P950. I’m using an old one for the W300.

It is really a rugged camera in its own but having a case for it when in general transit will extend its life.

Looks like you have a good fit for the W300. Keeping the dust and dirt off is probably just as important as being dropped.
Do you use a screen protector on your P950? I have not seen anyone mention how durable the screen is.

Not yet even using the 950. The screen tilts and swirls. Offhand I would say this camera is not very durable compared to the plastic on the W300. It’s not only the screen but the entire camera needs to be protected.

Always wear a strap.

The P1000 arrived today...what a tank! Overall it looks very well thought out, it has some weight to it but it feels good in my hands. All the buttons are ergonomic to my thumb and index finger. I took a few pictures and downloaded them to my phone using the Nikon Snapbridge ap. I also bought the instruction book written by Alexander White. Compared to the user manual that came with the camera, that was a good investment.

I have a fat squirrel running around in the backyard making daily visits to the corn feeder. If he'll sit still long enough, he may be my first subject.

Good advice on wearing a strap, I definitely want to be tethered to this one!

Where did you buy the P950? If you haven't even used it yet you might be able to return it and get the P1000.

At the rate Amazon was selling the P1000 over the past week, (24 in 7 days) I don't see the price coming down on them until Nikon releases the next bell and whistle. I hope it doesn't get bitter cold anytime soon, I'd like to take some outdoor pics but I don't want to do it with gloves or put the camera through a freeze and thaw cycle that creates internal and external moisture. I may have to do it from the pickup with the window rolled down.

I treat cameras like firearms and try to keep it cased when bringing it indoors from the cold. After a few hours they have warmed slowly with no condensation.
