This rifle shoots very well but I will admit, it is not fun to shoot. Even with the butt pad it hits that should like a hammer.

couldn't agree more .... historically I've been in the practice with what you are going to hunt with camp .... firing dangerous game loads in our 45-70 got my attention .... the reality is, unless something totally unexpected happens, my hunting days are over .... further, it doesn't require full power loads to punch a hole in a paper target or to ring a gong .... HSM's Cowboy Action 45-70 loads a 405 gr cast bullet with a muzzle of 1300 Feet Per Second .... they are actually fun to fire .... if/when I can get back to work on it, I have plans to develop load that will push Nosler 300 gr Ballistic Silvertips to a muzzle between 1200 and 1300 fps .... I believe they will have a fairly flat trajectory out to 100 yards and, most importantly, recoil will no longer be a factor .... I didn't buy our CCH 45-70 to turn it into a safe queen

I do not but I do believe that I saw some of it at my LGS and can pick it up.

I did not try to load the reloads at a terrifying load. According to the books I loaded it moderately right about in the middle. In Fact I have a bag of 50 new brass cases, that I do believe I am going to load to the bottom of the scale this time around. I am not a hunter either except for steel plates and paper. So the bottom of the scale will soot me just fine.

understood .... in what little testing I've been able to do, I've found that when you drop to a muzzle of 1200 to 1300 fps, it really reduces recoil

Berrys 350 gr plated bullets and about 16 grains of universal clays is your friend. Nice easy accurate load.

Took her to the range again today (11-8-2020) AND THE BRASS MAGAZINE FOLLOWER STILL WORKING GREAT ON THE RIFLE. You can tell that the magazine follower Brass was made for a loading gate feeding tube. It was about that size, but the sanding it to the brass magazine tube for my Henry it is still working really well. Glad I changed it out, but like said the plastic follower probably would have never worn out. I believe that to be a old wives tale about the plastic ones wearing out.
