nice looking Blackhawk .... just curious as to the differences you have experienced between firing 45 colt & 45 auto .... felt recoil, sound, barrel jump, ease of loading / unloading cylinders, impact point

Good question.

The 45 auto (standard 230 hardball) and the the 45 Colt (standard loads, not 45 +P stuff) are roughly equivalent as far as recoil. Essentially, both are very manageable and definitely more pleasant than even a standard 357 mag load.

The two cartridges have a very different type of recoil, though, due mostly to pressure differences and probably type of powders typically used. The 45 Colt is the typical slow thud, while the 45 auto is brisker and snappier, but not at all unpleasant. The big Ruger does a great job with either cartridge.

What I really like about a 45 Convertible is that you get the best of both cartridges as far as accuracy, rather than having to compromise accuracy with one, as you do in so many convertible combos. I get 45 auto accuracy in the Ruger that is right there with my good 1911s. For me, at least, the 45 Colt/45 auto convertible setup in a single action is the most useful setup of all the combos I've tried.

Also, love using a single action for this kind of setup, because you don't have to mess with moon clips.

Shooting .45 acp thru my 1873 Pietta was a surprise. Easy to shoot and rather accurate. At least as accurate as my 1911-A1.
Couldn't feel much difference in recoil other than the acp was just slightly snappier. NCG is correct, it's a great combo and way fun to shoot. And no moon clip!

I have just fired a few rounds with each cylinder and totally agree with North Country Gal's assessment. Think I will enjoy it for years to come.

Yup, basic NM Blackhawk. I do like the balance with the aluminum grip frame on our 4 5/8" version, but I do NOT like that light aluminum grip frame wet shooting those nasty Ruger only 45 Colt loads. Really hurts and I am not recoil shy in the least. Not that I shoot those loads on a regular basis, anyhow, but the gun can sure handle them.

And since this is a drool thread, here's another pic of our unfired OM 45 Convertible with the rare 4 5/8th inch barrel as of yet, unfired. Still not sue if I will fire it, but really is nice to take it out of the box and enjoy handling it. One of the best examples of a Ruger single action, ever.

Absolutely it does, Mark. The ST is simply a Single Six with 10 shots and fiber optics sights and if you don't like those sights, very easy to replace. Hey, my Uberti Cattleman 22 LR is 12 shots, so I'm no purist that insists on 6 shots.

I had a Single Ten and really enjoyed it. One I should have kept, for sure. If I come across a nice used ST, I'll grab it.

With out a doubt . I missed getting one by a few minutes at my favorite gun shop not long ago. Very cool revolver.
