16gr of universal and a Berrys plated 350gr makes a really nice shootin 45-70 load and its been very accurate for me in the AW-45-70

I am keeping in touch with my gun dealer but I must admit I am starting to lose faith...the 1885 high wall in 45 Colt may not happen if he can't get his license stuff sorted...been 10 months now...so may have to move to plan B (much like Plan 9 from Outer Space) and look at something else readily available in Canada. Nothing against my dealer, he was great on the Henry and the Colt I have. But I think he's in gov't limbo with no end in sight. Between Washington & Ottawa, there must be a maze of circular logic the likes of which we cannot imagine. I have emailed him again and we'll see what he comes back with. If nothing on the horizon, might just go full on Quigley or something similar. But I don't need to pile drive my shoulder into mush, so mild loads only...

I've gotten my best longer range 150-200+ yrd accuracy in 350 and 405 grain cast lead bullets.
Not so much with 300 grain. Fun up close 100 yrds little wild past that.

Im sure you would enjoy shooting the 350 load with the 16gr of Universal. I dont mind it a bit. Sure its not as mild as your 45 colt 1860 but its not like badger just kicked you in the shoulder either. I can shoot 50 rounds of it easily in an outing.

45-70 is a straight wall case, should be straight forward to reload? How many times can you re-use if shooting mild loads?

Im gonna be honest and say I dont know. Ive have never kept track. But Ive havent thrown many away from over use.

You wont have any issues reloading the 45-70 as long as you have been loading the 45 colt now. Its just as easy.

I've only been doing it for 4 years.
I've screwed cases up but one has never failed on me.

A friend that shoots a 45-70 Sharps in Black Powder Cartridge, when asked how long his cases would last, he said "forever ".

for our 45-70 I load 300 gr Nosler Ballistic Silvertips

===> hunting, strong action load 51.5 gr IMR 4198 .... 2225 FPS .... very accurate, flat shooting .... kicks like a big, angry mule

===> paper punching load 39.0 gr IMR 4198 .... 1454 FPS .... good groups, OK up to 100 yds .... considerably less recoil

===> plan to try 12 gr Unique .... 1151 FPS ... jury still out on groups within 100 yds .... fun to fire

I looked over the Pedersoli 1874 Sharps Business at your link, RR. That is one very nice-looking rifle. Pedersoli makes excellent quality firearms. I think a rifle from that company would be a keeper.

If my math is correct on converting Canadian into USD. I checked a couple of U.S. shops for pricing on the 1874, and your $1500 Canadian price is a nice chunk less than here. Best I could find is $1460 USD. You said the 1874 is available to you. Looks like it might be a good back up plan option, especially since you have the reloading expertise. So just a few pennies worth on my look at this rifle choice. Keep on ruminating....it will eventually come together just fine.

Had a few guys using there Quigley model when I was shooting BPCR. They were nice looking rifles and alot less than the Shilohs built in Montana. Is there a place where they have one in stock you could get your hands on one?

There are a couple of places that carry the Quigley but its like $2700, big ticket for punching holes in paper.

I held a C-Sharps rifle last year at a gun show. Similar to Quigley model. Nice. Also a Pedersoli Sharps 30-30. Both top notch workmanship.

Get a 45-70 and one of those cool lookin over the should belts and you will be lookin bad in those Alberta hills with Badger. If grizs pops up you can show him whos boss.
