The process

I use this method. Mount your new Skinner rear peep leaving the original front sight on. Then shoot using the front sight calculator posted on the Skinner web site. You then order and install the correct front sight.
If unable to get the elevation on the bull, I then set the peep to about the middle position to do the calculations.

That's the way I started on my Big Boy. It gets you in the ball park. But testing is the only way for sure. Plus the sights I'm using only come in a few heights. So often it takes some mods to get it all where I want it. Each rifle has been different.

Alrighty then! I can now hit what I'm aiming at with the 45/70. I had just loaded up a box of my cowboy torpedoes.

This am I installed the new Lyman 20 globe sight. It's BIG!

So anyway I now have some up and down adjustment in the rear sight at 50 yds.

Hey Squatch - I'm trying to set up my new H010CC with a Skinner lo-pro rear receiver peep and a Lyman Globe Front - what combo did you end using on your 45-70?

I like to keep 3 apertures with each rifle. .40,.70,.96. So I got the Skinner XA (extra aperture) from the Marlin page for the rear. The 3rd aperture rides in a barrel filler where the old sight was. Also from Skinner.

For the front I used a Lyman 20 mjt instead of a 17a. It's a good bit bigger. I think 7/8" tube.

The XA is tall. The Lyman 20 is as well. but the sight picture is amazing. If you like the Lyman 17a the 20 is even better. It lets in more light.

Nice thing about the large frames is there are lots of options. An Alaskan would look great on these. I kinda like the new sight he has for these that doubles as a scope base.

Yea - an Alaskan would look good, but do you think it would be tall enough to match up with a Lyman 20 on the front?

Might need a taller peep stem. I was going to try the express sight off my Big Boy or Golden Boy on the 45/70. But the 45/70 uses a larger screw thread to mount.

That 20 Globe really looks good on that rifle - matches well with the big octagon barrel - nicely done.
