Good point on shooting a problem bear. In our state, they are a game animal and if you shoot one without tag or out of season, you are in violation of the law, period. Wildlife officials know darn well that, for this reason, a lot of people who shoot black bears in defense of their lives or property don't report them. We get black bears in our yard, on occasion, as do our neighbors, but the truth is there are very, very few instances where you should have to resort to actually shooting a bear. I've had to fire a shot in the air, once, but that was enough to send the bear running. All of us like having bears for neighbors. Wouldn't be the north woods without them.

Concur whole-heartedly. Chances are probably 99.9% we'll never have a bear problem that needs to be solved with a 44MAG Henry, but it still feels nice to have that rifle around the barn. I'm actually more concerned with rabies - we've had a couple cases of rabid racoons, skunks, and foxes over the last few years - two I had to put down on our property.

my feelings exactly about having a 45-70 .... the chances are probably much higher than 99.9999999% I'll never have a lion, rhino, elephant, cape buffalo, or hippo problem that needs to be solved but it still feels nice to have a Henry 45-70 around the barn .... one never knows !!!!!

A 45-70 is on my "list." * We don't have many bears, rhinos, elephants or bison where I live, but heck, a 45-70 is just a joy to shoot, and that's all there is to it.

I see black bears and grizzlies all summer in the mountains but just steer a wide berth. They are just doing their thing. Nice to see a healthy population of them.
