.357 Ammo Recommendation

Have some of each - Hornady 158 gr XTP and MagTech 158 gr FN - on order. Found the Hornady for $16.99/box of 25, so could have been worse.

Once I get all this in hand and sorted out, I'll post up in Range Reports if it's anything worth posting about.

Good ammo suggestions so far from all the Henry Folk.
I've shot a variety of XTP brands out of my BB .357, and these two are possibly already on your next ammo shopping list. Between these two, my rifle is partial to the FM ammo.

Fiocchi 158gr Extrema XTP HP
Freedom Munitions 158gr XTP

The ammo I and my Big Boy particularly like is Black Hills 158gr JHP. I would use it when next out on deer hunt.

I agree with GFK. Shooting your Carbine will tell the end of the story.

check out buffalo bore as well, pricey but good ammo, and btw im jealous because n missouri hunting is enjoyable, if you get from say maysville and east towards kirksville and north to the iowa line you can find some whitetail/muley crosses, they will be a bit darker and bigger. and they are all corn feed up there,

and since mo is the show me state i vote you send us all a bit of proof and im calling dibbs on the tenderloin

Hornady actually make 2 158gr XTP bullets, a hollow point and a flat point.
The FP is designed to be tougher and hold together better at rifle velocities, I use mainly cast now in mine but the bullet that would be top of my list to try if I went back to jacketed would be the 180gr XTP.

I think Hornady only load the HP 158gr XTP so the above is pretty much worthless info when it comes to factory ammo.

I tend to like the heavier bullets for good penetration....I used the Federal premium with 180g Swift bullets to kill 3 deer last Fall. All were one shot kills at about 50, 60, and 70 yards. Two shots were broadside and one angling away...did not get complete penetration on any. I prefer complete penetration for a better blood trail if needed. These cartridges are pricy but I only use them for hunting. I don’t load .357...maybe I should; the 180g xtp mentioned above sounds like something that I would like.

I'd already noted above my preference to deer hunt with Black Hills 158gr JHP. But reading your comments re. a heavier bullet, plus last year's good harvest results of three deer using the Federal, give me pause to think. I have a stock of the Federal Vital Shok 180gr Swift A-Frame JHP ammo. I got it early this year thinking about trying the heavier bullet and maybe using for deer. I just forgot about it until your post. Think I'll take it along next range outing to compare it and the BHA out of my Carbine.

BTW, in your first photo what is the knife you have there? I'm looking at getting another knife, which I'd like to take with me this fall/winter when hunting either deer or rabbits. I like the looks of your handle. Is it more rounded and thicker? If so, is it also comfortable and solid-to-use? Looks to be. And what is the blade length? It's a very similar configuration to the woods knife I'm considering, which has a fully-rounded handle. Would like to find out what yours is....thanks.

Hey PT7, I think you will like the Fed 180g Swift loads. The knife is a Helle Eggen a sort of entry level Helle. I’ve had it for about 15 yr and have field dressed several dozen whitetails with it I reckon. The blade on mine is 3.5” long but the current ones are about 4” long it seems. It has the typical scandinavian edge grind and is made of laminated steel...a very hard central layer sandwiched between SS steel outer layers. It is dangerously sharp and easy to touch up with a good ceramic rod or stone. The handle is generous for a good firm secure grip; I added the diagonal grooves for a better grip in bloody conditions. It will split the sternum of deer readily with a good grip and cutting AWAY from you. Helle makes a lot of different model knives and I give them my highest recommendation for a good working/hunting knife...but use with care. A couple of pics, one of 8 pt buck I killed last Fall showing the Helle in use.

Good harvest photos, and I also appreciate the info on your knife, TNman. I've not before heard of Helle knives. Pulled up the home web page and then found your knife there. Looks like some good reading ahead for me. BTW, the current model of yours (as far as I can tell not knowing all the knife configs they offer) has a 4.33" blade with a 3.98" handle according to their specs.

These Helle current specs, plus some of the other knife descriptions, are quite close to the specs I have on the new blade I'm considering. So that has given me a fun project and a segue to posting some info on my potential knife purchase. Here is what I'm going to do.

I'll keep your info from this thread, read up some more on the Helle, then add specs/description of the blade I'd like to get in another thread in our Knife forum. For me, I'll have a good comparison of your Norwegian-made knife, and the hand-forged traditional Siberian Yakut / Evenki knife I may get. Like I said, their builds are similar, and how you've used yours is what I'd like to purpose mine for also. I'm close to pulling the trigger...oops, rather drawing out of the sheath, a new knife for myself! Will let you know when I get this together and ready to post it.

Again, thanks. Your Helle knife looks quite cool, and for the service years it has given you, appears to be a quality blade.

PT7... Sounds like a plan....and upon further review my knife is a Folkekniven and not the Eggen. That explains the difference in blade lengths and my knife doesn't have the triple laminated blade. But it still has performed wonderfully over the years. Good luck in your knife search.

Yup, the Folkekniven descript lists the blade at 3.46", so I'll check this one out. Good-looking knife. I also noticed the blade is made of Sandvik 12C27 stainless steel. That's good material. It reminded me of a thread I posted in our knife forum back in March, 2017 http://henryrifleforums.com/viewtopic.p ... andvik+saw . I "showed off" my new Case Peanut I had just purchased. Then I also described the Sandvik hand saw I have, which had belonged to my Dad. You might find it an interesting read. The Scandinavian-made hand saw is top quality, and also beautifully crafted.
