I have best success with the 3 finger lever as well. I tried a lever wrap, but I got used to shooting my 1860 without it.

The lever wrap I like it and I use it for fill . That way in my speed runs I don't have any up and down play and allow me a more positive feel . Remember I'm cowboy action shooter and not a hunter .

After some experimentation I've ended up using buffalo hide to wrap all my levers. It has the softness of dear skin but it's tuff.
The wrap on the Big Boy hasn't been treated with Whites Leather preservative the other has.
