Range Report: paper targets with rimfire

Those are some nice looking snowshoes. I have (or had, can't seem to find them) a set of the first Sherpa snowshoes made in the early 70's. I know some people are fans of the old style snowshoes, I've used them and they are OK for flat or slight slopes but with the cleats and hinged bindings you can (I could many years ago) go up steep slopes that someone on traditional snowshoes couldn't even begin to go up.

Your post brought back many memories. I also had a set of Gene Prater Sherpas and had the pleasure of meeting him several times while mountaineering.

I ran across this article when I was searching for a photo. Not that I'm likely to ever use them again I'll have to do some searching for mine, I don't remember loaning or giving them to anyone and they're not the kind of thing I'm likely to throw out.

That was a great article. I’ve climbed Mt Rainier many times in the summer wearing crampons. I’ve tried summiting in the winter and have only gotten to about 12,500 feet wearing Sherpas. The straps needed to be bound tight to stay on yet if bound too tight would cut off the circulation in your feet. I much prefer the modern type that bind to your boots just like the modern crampons.

My current snowshoes are great except I would never trust them with my life.

I went for a four mile walk along the road today. Next time I’m taking my snowshoes so I can venture off the highway. I say highway although I only saw two cars the entire time.
