local shooting match

Post by bandit1250 » Fri May 10, 2019 7:13 am

I have a couple friends who shoot in a local 22 rifle match that want me to go with them. They shoot at 40 yds. at those orange 1" dots with the little cross in the center. I believe they said you get three shots at each target for closest to the center. They kind of laugh when I said I would use my peep sight Remington 513T which has a very good Redfield International Match sight from a Rem. 40-X 308 that has a special made base mount to make the center fire sight work on the much smaller rim fire action and adjust in with out running out of adjustment. They say I wouldn't be able to see the cross in the center and don't understand that you just center the orange target and forget about the cross. I put some orange targets out in the field at 40 yds. and tried three shots at each target with the 513T and two different brands of ammo. Shot both top targets and made a sight correction and shot the bottom two targets three shots each. I would prefer to use the peep sight rifle because the peep is more precise on adjustments than most any scope I have. Very easy to dial it right in when you learn your sight well. My friends said it would just be something for the guys to look at and shake their heads in disbelief some one would show up there with peep sights against scoped rifles especially a 70 year old guy with a 73 year old rifle.
The problem I have is you shoot their ammo and you never what it will be until you get there. Sometimes they switch several times through the shoot and that is why I like the precision the peep has making adjustments with the different ammo. Here is the targets I tried.

Outstanding. Looks like you won that one. :D

It's funny. I used to shoot PPC Service Revolver Matches with my duty gun and duty leather. A model 64 Smith 4" fixed sight revolver. Other officers would grin while we waited for the match to begin. :)
They weren't laughing afterward.
I forgot who said it, but there is a quote that says something about "... The man with one well worn gun."
You can tell a lot about the character of a man...
by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.

I don't look back at the things I can no longer do, I just look forward to the things I still can.

I'm known by many, here, as a scope shooter, because, well, I use scopes on most of my rifles. For me, it's largely a matter of necessity, because our climate is really stingy on sunny days and even then, this is forest country and you still have to deal with targets in the shade. That said, I've had the discussion on other forums of just how good are iron sights, anyway? One very experienced user of iron sights proudly boasted that a good shooter with proper iron sights should be able to shoot groups at 50 yards that rivaled what you can do with a scope. Not under all conditions, mind you, but under favorable iron sight shooting conditions. I remember taking his side and how so many others scoffed at such a notion. I then set out to prove it, using mostly CZ 22s with either the excellent tangent open sights or a peep sight. Mind you, using iron sights for this kind of precision work requires a lot of practice and experience with these sights, but you really can shoot groups at 50 yards with iron sights that rival what you can do with a scope, as bandit has so effectively shown. Great shooting, bandit.

Thank you NCG, Few people believe the accuracy that a good set of aperture front and rear sights offer to some one with good eye sight if they have never used quality peeps. I am for now blessed with very good eyes. I also think it helps me to have the adjustable aperture at your finger tips instead of having to constantly be swapping them for the one suited to your light conditions. I love my adjustable apertures on my peep sights. CZ tangent sights may be just a small step down to peeps with the globe front. Happy shooting and glad our friendly web sight with great members is back up.

BigAl, Don't sell your self short as long as you enjoy shooting you don't have to be a competition shooter. Make it a game with you and your wife.
I don't shoot competition but I shoot against my self and try to be at least as good or a little better with my shooting than the last time out. We don't need to be competition shooters to have fun. I shoot plastic push pins and empty 22 casings placed in card board with the rim facing out. If I can hit them all with less shots than the last time I tried it then I am happy. Some times I can run a dozen with one shot each and some times it may take 15 shots but I still had fun and will try to do better next time. I also compete with my wife and at times she wins handily. That's OK and it means she is listening to what I tell her and puts it to good use.
She is good from the bench but if she shot at you off hand just go about your business because she will miss. :o  We really have fun when we can go and shoot and come up with targets that are different. She enjoys empty shot shells as much as any thing and likes watching them fly.

Yeah, Bandit. Great target results again, and especially cool 8-) that you and your wife are having fun shooting together.

The very best is that you "are now blessed with very good eyes." That's huge. Types of sights, ammo & firearms choices, models of guns are all things a person can decide. But to have good eyesight is beyond whatever we can do. Enjoy.

I remember some time back one photo you posted of your squirrel harvest with maybe a dozen plus squirrels laying across the top of a log. Remember that one? The splash targets you just posted prove those bushy-tails didn't have a chance!

Thanks for your post.

Yes, it really is a game, but the best part of shooting against yourself is that you get to set the rules and push yourself as hard as you want, right up to your very limits and sometimes even beyond. Here's an example of going a little crazy just to see if I could do it. Five shots, here, and it took me well over a half an hour to do it. For each shot, I probably backed of five or six times until everything was just right, including backing off the shot when I missed that very narrow window of time when my shooting eye was at its sharpest. Stopped plenty of times with my eyes closed to rest them. And lest anyone thinks I am gifted with 20/20 vision, I have never had 20/20 vision and have worn glasses all my life. Even with my glasses, I don't have 20/20 vision. To make it even more difficult, this was with my right eye, my weak eye.

Gun was a CZ Ultralux 22 LR with its long 28" barrel. Sights were tangent open sights, not peep sight with a globe or anything that fancy, just an open rear with a blade front, using a six o'clock hold. Target was an 8" bull at a full 100 yards. I really doubt I could do this , again, or even want to do it, again, given how exhausted I was when I was done. By the 4th shot, I was a nervous wreck. By the fifth, I had to to do some meditation to keep my mind on task. Trust me, when I tell you, though, it's 5 shots I will never forget. Oh, yeah, the games we play.

There is no tougher competitor than yourself.
