We arrived at the trailhead on Sunday afternoon and rested the best we could. At midnight we ate a hearty breakfast and went back to sleep till 3 am. By 4 am we hit the trail with headlights but with a full moon we didn't really need them.

At daybreak we arrived at Long's Pass and saw Stuart for the first time this trip.

It now gets steep again. For the next 800 feet of elevation it is about 55 degrees.

We stopped at 9,000 feet, just 415 feet short of the summit but time ran out. We could see climbers on top.

After descending we stopped when it got dark. This is the moon rise.

We didn't bring a tent or sleeping bag and just jumped into a bivy sack together. This was taken in the morning.

Lots of chipmunks and a few marmots but no mountain goats. We did see some prints that could have been goats.

Very nice. The closest I came to that was way back in my younger days on a small Hawaiian island the military used as a gun range called Kaloolawe. At some point they had released goats on the island for "research purposes" and once the testing was completed had abandoned them there. The goats were damaging the vegetation and eroding the island. The native hawaiians sued the federal govt and won,. so the military branches were tasked with hunting the goats to control the population. Seems the Marines were very good at it. We climbed in and out of the steep valleys and hiking loops around the island, you know... actually hunted the animals, rather than waiting for one to walk by the campsite for four days. :D

Some of the climbs were nearly vertical, and the hardpan flats we suspected originated from lava flow years past. It was hot enough crossing it. :twisted:

It must be frustrating to have to turn back after being so close to the summit, but it certainly looks like you have found a great climbing partner.
