DIET is a four letter word.

:o

In the old days, you know, back when I was in the Corps, when I looked down, I could see my feet. :D I could also eat what I wanted, then go run three miles without grabbing my chest and thinking I would die. I rode mountain bikes through single tracks in the woods, scuba diving was a hobby, and I didn't choose clothing because it hid things.

Years later, after the body took decades of abuse, running is no longer possible and walking is limited. I can't exercise to lose weight. DIET has become a four letter word. People advertise them with the words attached like Miracle, NEW, and Amazing. As I watched my weight climb, and climb, and ... sigh... climb as the years did ;) I finally went to the VA MOVE program as the Docs recommended. We both knew I needed to lose weight since my lower back injuries and my knees would both benefit. Even rolling myself along in the chair would be easier if I lost a few pounds.

The MOVE program staff, dieticians and nurses welcome you to the program, give you a basic physical and then recommend a combination of diet and exercise, tailored to your needs and abilities. MY assigned nurse was faced with a difficult task, help the old man lose weight without adding an exercise routine. I told her that FAD diets don't work and I wasn't going to take drugs.

What we need to do is change your diet, what you eat. It's a lifestyle change, because your diet is your daily consumption. (Funny thing, my Nurse was in perfect shape.) Round is a shape.

But, we discussed my current daily intake. Sheesh, around 3,000 calories. If I wanted to lose two or three pounds a month, I'd need to cut back to 2,500 calories a day. Really? Cut back 500 calories? They provided a Bluetooth scale that reported my weight to the RN for daily tracking. If I did the 90 day program, they would take their tattlescale back, but give me a nice scale in return that I could keep. "Try and keep your caloric intake below 2500," she said, "and you should see the pounds slowly begin to fade away."

I tracked my caloric intake, and set my goal at 1500. For 90 days, I never broke 1500 calories, and often hovered around 1,000. In 90 days, I dropped nearly 48 pounds. The RN balked at first, but they monitored by health and there was never a hiccup. She stopped complaining about the low caloric intake. She marveled at the self control. About the time I finished the program, we made a major decision.

We we decided to sell the house and move to Oklahoma. We began packing all our stuff and we were having to eat out. We moved cross country, and lived in a travel trailer for three months. We spent six months working on the new farmhouse. Too busy to cook properly or track my calories, I slowly gained back the weight over the next five years, five here, ten there. I tried to get back on the old caloric tracking diet, limiting my intake. The wife would complain that I wasn't eating. "What, you didn't like it, what was wrong with it?" She didn't think I needed to worry about dieting any longer. "Just eat it."

I stepped on the scale a month ago, and I had gained back nearly 40 of the lost pounds. I had been telling myself I needed to get back to that lifestyle change, of monitoring what I ate and watching my calories. Two weeks ago, I decided I would. I told Miss T I was starting the diet again, for health reasons. She finally agreed. It's amazing how easy it was to slip back into the mode of control, especially with her support. After the first week, I didn't miss the larger meals, the snacks, or the extra pieces of this and that. The weight isn't coming off as fast as before, but it's coming off.

Every now and then I wish I had a piece of pie or a slice of cake, but it passes. :)

I retired and quit smoking about 25 years ago and immediately gained 30 lbs. Didn't even try. It just happened.

I've had a couple of surgeries that helped but I've started to just eat less. I have a cousin that if you fill a heaping plate for him, we will wipe the place clean. He's had two sets of stints and he's 10 years younger than me. My goal is not to clean my plate. I eat till I'm full and quit eating.

I also try to eat healthy food and Carol helps a lot. We try to avoid carbs. We do eat a lot of meat. We eat a lot of veggies as well.

Doing this I have dropped 25 lbs and would still like to lose 10 more.

The disappointment is that on holidays like Thanksgiving, when I used to gorge myself, I just can't eat much. I will eat carbs and especially deserts that the womenfolk make though. I might gain a lb or two, but it will come right back off.

I'm not looking at the calorie count as a diet, but as the RN said all those years ago, as a lifestyle change. I'll stick to the 1500 per day and let the weight level out where it will. The good thing is, she said you can treat yourself now and then, have a piece of cake or a candy bar as a reward... or have a real meal with friends. Now and Then, not every other day, or once a week, but now and then... and a piece of cake doesn't mean "Half the Cake."

Desert at Thanksgiving is easy for me to get buy if it only consists of Pumpkin Pie. I just cannot eat pumpkin pie at all anymore.

Miss T bought an apple pie and ice cream for dessert when my son and family visited this past weekend. I had one small piece, a small scoop of ice cream, and still stayed under my calorie count. I didn't have any more of the pie or ice cream before it was all gone... A real test of will power for me.

I gained 35 pounds when I moved from Seattle to Wisconsin. Stuffing yourself around here is cultural. I finally put a stop to it and started counting calories. And I forbid people from bring candy to the card and football/baseball games. It wasn’t popular but I lost 20, then gained 5 back before losing it again. I’m now down 30 with 15 more to go.

I’m not on any special diet other than limiting portions. Maybe we can make this an ongoing thread.

Sounds like a winner Sir.

In VA, I hit 280 and decided I had had enough. I went from 280 to 232 in that 90 days. My realistic goal was 220, my dream was 200. I was around 230 when we started packing and quit weighing. The new lifestyle fell apart then, we weren't cooking or tracking anymore, regular meals were out the window.

I slowly gained back over the next couple years, and last month, I tipped the scales at 268. After two weeks I'm down to 260. I'm working at it. It would be loads easier if I could run, ride exercise bikes, or the like... but sadly that is not possible. I'll stick to my new lifestyle ... hopefully, and keep losing.

Others are welcome to post on the thread if they want to form a "Support Group."
I had gotten all the way into size 50 jeans. Tina ordered 48s the other day, she has no problem ordering new smaller jeans when I need them. (I mostly wear sweats, but will wear jeans to town so I have a belt to hold "Things.")

It’s hard for me to loose weight because all my friends are overweight. There are a dozen or so of us that are single, in our 70’s and 80’s that go out on adventures which usually include meals. And my shop has a full kitchen where we watch a big screen TV. Of course everyone wants to out do everyone else in bringing food. I’m trying to change the type of food people bring.

During the summer I was working hard but now there isn’t much I can do in the cold and snow. I live in a hikers paradise and should do that more although hiking in single digits with 20 mph wind isn’t fun.

At any rate I’ll try to post my weight once a week maybe on Mondays.

I decided to ONLY weigh in on Sunday morning. I found during that 90 day program six or so years ago, that my weight was falling, but naturally increased some days. I'm sure this was due to the body's fluctuations, variations in digestion, etc. By weighing in once a week, I skip the jagged track that graph would take. The drop will be slower at my (our?) age, but if I do my part it should still drop. ;)

I weigh myself every morning. It tells me how much I can eat for the day. I finally went under another milestone and weighed in at 179.8 this morning. I tend to loose weight in days then maintain for a week. I’m about halfway on the loss this time. I’m hoping to make 175 then maintain for a couple of weeks.
