I can not ever see a scenario where a part of Canada decides to join the US as another state. They'd make themselves into their own autonomous entity first, and that won't happen either.
I live in eastern/central NY, and there is frequent talk about how the southeast part of the state should be its own separate state. This refers to the areas around what is commonly called NYC, including Long Island, the five boros, and a bit of the areas around those. The population is much more dense there, and the politics that result are almost polar opposites from what they are over the vast majority of the rest of the state. As logical as that may seem, it'll never happen.

Kinda like that here in the West.
