First time out with my .357 Carbine/Scope frustration.

The rifle was awesome and smooth. Ran great and I’m very happy with it.

The frustration came with trying to zero the scope. It’s a Leupold VX-3HD. It was shooting way low. We’re talking 8-12”low. I’ve sighted in a scopes before but this one has me stumped.

Usually it takes a few clicks one way or the other to get the height dialed in. Not today!

I went all the way around the dial and it was still hitting 6-8” low.

I did some YouTube research and found that I needed to take off the dial and the turn the post to dial in the scope?

I don’t think my LGS bore sighted it when they installed my scope.

Anyone have any experience like this ?

I will be calling my LGS Monday to see if they can help me out.

I went on Amazon a couple years ago and bought a cool thing, the purchase price was recovered quickly in ammunition costs saved. Laser Bore Sighers. They are brass cartridges that contain batteries and the laser. When you put the batteries in the laser turns on, you load them in and Boom, the laser shines down the center of the bore. You aim the firearm at your target, and then adjust the iron sights, red dot, or scope to match the laser dot.

I have one for .223, 308, and 12 gauge. Works great.

At what distance were you that low? If it was 25 yards or less, then something is wrong. Eight inches at 100 yards is about 32 clicks, which isn't unreasonable. But 8 inches at 25 yards is about 120 clicks, and that's possibly going to max out that scope.
There is a possibility that the barrel is mounted into the receiver at a downward angle, I've had a 1022 that was like that, but it's unlikely.
That one-piece mount looks very low to the bore line, which is nice, but sometimes things touch. Check that there are no contact points between the scope and the rifle, that front sight looks close in the picture.

I would also suggest the laser bore tool to set the scope up. Of course none of my rifles has a scope yet.

Coach, I would also recommend a laser bore sight. Either a dedicated cartridge like BOM suggests, or a kit with various diameter attachments. I have both. They get me close to where the gun actually shoots and saves time and ammunition.

I would have hoped a gun shop would have bore sighted and installed scope, but you never know.

Of course, the laser bore sighters rarely get you on target without live fire, it's only happened once for me. But, I got my Ruger American sighted in with Six shots, rather than a dozen using the bore sighter. I dialed in both the iron sights on one 12 gauge and a laser on another with the bore sighter, and needed less than 6 rounds to confirm. Saved a lot of shooting.

I am glad that you had fun!! I bought a bore sighter kit that attaches to the end of the barrel with it. So far, I have been able to get on paper at 25 yards. It works with .177-.50 cal barrels: https://www.amazon.com/XAegis-Boresight ... 155&sr=8-1

I forgot to mention that the side gate was great. I didn’t use the tube at all.

The advice to not put the round all the way in and push it in with the next round was the way to go.

My Big Boys wear a smaller diameter scope exit and it barely clears the front sight. That’s probably your problem as mentioned earlier. That’s a fine looking rifle.

That was my first thought, looking at his photo's it's mounted the (usually) correct orientation. I wonder, though, if it is a henry mount or an aftermarket mount. It does seem like it is pointing down into the barrel.

The original picture in post 1 show a cantilevered mount to clear the hump at the front of the receiver. So not meant to be installed rotated. But if the mount is sloped like DSGrouse suggests, than rotating it might help as the hump would tilt the mount up some.

Agree does not sound like a scope issue, 3" elevation change at 25y for a full revolution sound about right. That is around 12moa or 1 foot at 100y, another thing that might be worth checking is if the elevation adjustment is actually in middle of its adjustment range. Probably unlikely but a possibility someone has played with it and screwed it towards the bottom of its adjustment range.

Mebbe ya scope rings aren't level.........Cut about 3 shims from a Pepsi can and put them into the bottom half of ya front ring........Run scope back adjustments dead .......Remount and first zero at 35-30 yards........Once there ya can move on out for final zero.
