Problem with new Henry

Post by Mcarlcochran » Mon Feb 24, 2025 7:40 pm

All,
I have just bought a new Henry 45-70 brass side gate 22" barrel. I am experiencing feeding issues with the Hornady LeverEvolution 325gr ammo. On the first round the cartridge will get stuck on the carrier with only about .25in if the cartridge coming out of the magazine. The action will be stuck open and I have to take a cleaning rod to push the round back into the magazine with great difficulty. This has happened 3 times in 15 rounds. Is it just this ammo or do you think there is a magazine issue? Thanks

Does this always happen with the first round levered from a full magazine?
Officially the magazine holds 4 rounds, if you squeeze 5 in, then you might get too much compression on the mag tube spring resulting in too much pressure on the carrier/lifter group in the receiver.
Also, when operating the lever, remember to do so with firm rapid authority.

Call Henry Customer Service and talk with them. They will get you straight one way or another. You might need to send the rifle back, but normally the turnaround time is quick.

Thanks, I have called Henry and got a shipping label. I'm going to try different ammo first before sending it out.

If you haven't sent your rifle back to Henry, you might think of taking it down and seeing if it has any built of grease or foreign matter. I had a BBS that was full of a substance that looked like fiberglass covered with goo. I cleaned the gun then relubed it. It worked good after that.

I hope they get it straightened out for you. That is the only round I shoot and have never had a feeding issue.
Where's the ammo, dammit! Vietnam 66-67
