Coffee Prices

I remember the gas lines for sure. Under the reign of Jimmie Carter. I had what the govt called a "Critical Job" and I
had to get to work no matter what so the govt rented a gasoline truck and sold us fuel in the fenced in parking lot.
That was nice but I couldn't buy enough except to get back and forth to work, so I sat in gas lines if I wanted to take
the family anywhere.

I remember back in the late 70s I was in line at the grocery store and the guy ahead of me was complaining about the cost of coffee. He told me that there was a lot of coffee being grown in the mountains of Tennessee and it was all just a plot to extort the consumer. I didn't want to get into a big argument with him about coffee being a tropical plant that wouldn't survive in Tennessee. Besides, it was coastal California.

How many of you remember the sky rocking coffee prices in the 1970's? Inflation was so bad back then for a while the government instituted mandatory limit on price increases.
Not just coffee prices running amuck. Sugar was too. The DOJ went after the sugar companies for colluding, gouging and price-fixing. Testors got sued for raising the price of model paints from 15c per bottle to 19c.

What I remember the most was the cost of gasoline nearly doubling when you could even get it. Who remembers the two-hour lines?

I don't remember long lines affecting us. I do remember buying gas on odd/even days based on our license plate numbers.

We had lines here but not two-hour lines. A lot of the cause for the lines was people worried about the day no gas was going to be available so they topped off their tanks every day.
