Get some 2400 or H-110 and buy some Hornady 240Gr XTP bullets load those up and try them. If it wont shoot those better Id ask for my money back.

With all the talk of late about the poor accuracy of the 44's, I pulled my '07 made BBB out.
At 50yds and open sights, as mine was made before they d&t'd the receivers. Now this rifle was sent back in Feb. 2020 because the mag tube was tearing away from the barrel.
A lot of changes between '07 and '20, and the mag tube is attached differently so they changed the barrel also. What a surprise when I got it back.
Any way today I had these three left over hand loads and these factory loads that a friend gave me the other day. They are Fed., and assume they are 240 gr. They were jhp's fer sure.šŸ˜‰šŸ˜
20240227_113640.jpg

I was leaning on a bag, not bad for old eyes and factory sights.

I’d take that bottom group any day given the buckhorn set up. You are in the same boat as me. Mine is a 2015 manufactured BBSC so also has the old style mag tube. That’s why they are replacing both that and barrel together.

My barrel etc arrived at the warranty depot on Monday, and I emailed the depot guy and Tom Kotz this morning for confirmation that everything is in good shape so I can ship the carbine off. The guy who does Henry’s warranty work gets a mix of 4-5 star and mostly 1 star reviews, so this is going to be an interesting experiment. If it goes horribly, I’m going to hold Henry responsible and maybe try to get current cash value for the carbine and buy a new Marlin 1894 instead…

Homeward bound! Should be here on the 5th. Henry sent me a few goodies to cover my shipping cost to the depot, and ship back on their dime. I really hope it shoots my chosen ammo better than the slow twist did. Tom Kotz at Henry has been super helpful and I’d hate for it to be for nothing if it doesn’t shoot.

I feel like I could have picked more stuff, but unfortunately I think most of Henrys stuff is kind of goofy. Elmer would use a lot of it to hunt wabbits. The cuff fits either .30-30 or .44 so it might end up on my Marlin… Would I burn up for putting a Henry leather on a Marlin?

It’s back! And the 1-6x Vortex is mounted and laser bore sighted. Got a new Nikon spotter, so all that’s left is time to get to the range!

Well, I finally got some range time today. I think the new barrel is a winner, but my new scope mounts are junk! I was all over the place again, but not like before. I got some flashes of potential, then put the .44 down to let the barrel cool, and next round it was consistently shooting elsewhere. I also shot my wife’s new .270 Weatherby and my freshly scoped SGC in.22LR. I honestly left thinking ā€œscrew these dang Henrys!ā€, as neither one was doing anything good. In the end, I figured the rings on my .44 were not tightening properly (They are QD rings), I ordered a new set of quality rings that are not QD, so I’ll give it one more chance. The cost of ammo is starting to piss me off though. I had the .44 good on Federal and then when I went to dial in my $70 for 20 hunting rounds, it went to pieces and I shot most of a box before finding the loose mounts. Ugh.

I went back out to the shop and had a look at my targets. The 55 yard one shows promise. The 100 yard (with some .270 sprinkled in) isn’t horrible, given the wind and shifty scope mounts. I think with a bit more time and ammo, I might get it to a happy place.

Sometimes we just like a dog chasing its tail. Hope you get the kinks worked out of that 44. It’s been a journey for you for sure.

Glad it's coming along Red, I'm betting the new rings will make a big difference.
Yep, 44 ammo can be pricey, wish you were closer we'd reload some and see what we could figure out.
I can't even remember the last time I shot my 44 rifle.

Yeah, I hope it comes together. I have two sets of furniture for the .44 and the fore end has a bit of play, so I thought the slight rattle / slop I felt was that. Glad I figured out it was rings too.

I shot the last of my hand loads yesterday too. I have some American Eagle cheap stuff, but it’s my hunting ammo that’s pricey. I was close with the cheap stuff, but of course ended up blowing a $70 box of hunting loads trying to sort it out. I should learn that if it’s going sideways after 5 shots, it’ll still be sideways after 15…

So some more rounds have gone down the tube. It’s relatively good with 240 gr American Eagke JHPs (I feel confident it will be in 2 moa), and then I shoot my 225 gr Barnes VOR-TX hunting rounds, and it is literally off the paper at 50 yards. This is, in layman’s terms, a load of shhhh it. I just ordered some 270 gr Federal Hammer Downs. If it won’t shoot them, I’m done. I’m going to sell it and order a new Marlin Trapper in .30-30 Win. At least I’ll have lots of ammo to go with the .44 BBSC. I’m disappointed as my .357 Mag BBSC is a tack driver.

Reading a bit more on the Hammer Down ammo this morning… It was co-designed with Henry, so if it doesn’t work, there are no more excuses. It seems to favor the heavier bullets now, so the .270 grains should help. Performance stats (claims) are certainly positive.
