S&W 65 for Shooting Month

Well, I did get some shooting in for National Shooting Month. Had about 6 hours to spare. It was nice getting out. It has been a few months. Took my Model 65 out, because it has been at least 3 years, since it has been shot.

I took 74 rounds but only shot 24. I shot double action. The trigger was a bit heavy; the pull was not too long though. Overall, I am happy. Shoot 20 rounds at groups of 5, at 7 yards. Then, shot 4 rounds rapid fire, at 5 yards. The rapid fire was fun. I will probably do more of that. I used a paper plate. However, I only hit 50%.

I shot Remingtons and Perfectas. Two of the Perfectas were miss. As the Sun was going down, the front sight became harder to see. At any rate, I got some shooting in.

NICE! Those older Smiths are fun to shoot. Don't have the Model 65 but do own a nice Model 66 no dash and now a 686 Plus with 3 inch barrel that is great to carry along a trail.

Yes, it is about the same as I bought it, in 1991. It is a 65-5. The -5 indicates some change made. I think that it had to do with the yoke. The only thing that I done is replaced the grips, not too much more that I can do with it. Yet, I do want to take off the side plate and oil some parts. It might help things work smoother. I may have shot about 700 or so rounds through it, over the years. So, it has not worn in much. But, I do enjoy shooting it. In fact, I enjoy shooting, period.

Four rounds at seven yards rapid fire is what that pistol was made for. And two rounds out of four would do it’s job. Good shootin’.

Those K frame fixed sight S&W’s sure have a nice clean look. Yours is a perfect example of what I’m saying.

I carried a 4" model 64 on duty for my first 4 years out of the academy, and shot it in Service Revovler class for a decade. When we switched to the Glock for duty I bought my 4" and one of the 2" guns the Sergeants were authorized for plain clothes or off duty. I still have both. MY 4" has about 10k rounds through it and the trigger is as smooth as oil on glass. Very accurate and as you said, fun to shoot.

It's hard to beat a 3" model 65. Nice shooting. Keep enjoying that fine revolver.

Nice classic K frame Smith 357. Hard to beat for an all around 357. Nice work with the rapid fire shooting.

You are right about those old K-Frames, I think they are good looking guns,

The 64 and 65 are very similar, I suspect the only difference is the caliber, with the 65 being chambered for the 357 and the 64 being limited to 38.
The funny thing was, when we carried the 38 caliber model 64, I never really felt undergunned. We carried two speedloaders and originally carried what was known as the FBI load, a 158 grain Lead Semi Wadcutter. After some research, I transitioned the department to the Spear Gold Dot. We stayed with the Gold Dot ammunition when we went to the .40 Caliber Glock 22 for our new Service Weapon. I shot PPC and was speed loading the revolvers on a regular basis in practice and competition. I could speedload the revolver as fast or faster than the "average" officer could reload the semi-autos. (As could most PPC shooters.)
