Is your 32-40 brass at max or min oal length? If it was me Id do the dummy round seat the bullet to the top of the cannelure and try that.

I've found a couple of sources that say the max case length is 2.130". Minimum is listed as 2.120". The cases I have are all pretty consistent around 2.125", so unless they stretch a bunch during resizing, probably won't need to trim them.

I have seen specs for cartridge over all length (OAL) that range from 2.460"-2.500" (my Hodgdon manual) to the 2.500" length mentioned above in CT_Shooter's post. I'm not sure if that means minimum or max length? :? Somewhere online, in one of my many SEARCHes for .32.-40 load info, I've read that a few rifles want the OAL to be kinda long-ish to feed, fire, and eject. Thanks to the internet that that there even is any info out there for this cartridge and other ones like it, but there's also a bit of confusion about it as well...... Some get loaded into single shot rifles, some into some of Winchester's more "obscure" models, and etc..

And good call on the dummy round. I'd figured I'd make one all along, but I may make a few at different lengths to see what happens......

I'll keep y'all posted, eventually. I'm supposed to get my .32-40 dies Friday, but I will be away from the computer for a coupla days while my eye "gets back to sorta normal". I get my second cataract/astigmatism correction surgery tomorrow, and have to lay low for a coupla days afterwards.

Al, what model of Dillon are you using? Man, I wish I'd bought some other conversion plates and dies for other cartridges for my XL650 years ago, when that sorta thing was a bit less pricey. I do really like that press. It's been as reliable as an anvil as long as I've owned it.

My Dillons are Square deals. I have 2 of them. At one time I had three but gave one to a step Daughter and her husband. At the time I gave that one to them I helped her get set up and she bought some dies for the machine. The prices were about triple of my last purchase. Dillons prices are ridiculous. I have about 5 or 6 sets of dies for mine. I like my Dillons but there services anymore for the machines are not what they once were. My 10mm is a 610 Smith and Wesson 4 inch barrel. I just bought it about a month ago

I also have a pair of Square Deal presses. Had them since the mid 1980s, and can't say anything bad about them. One is my small primer machine, usually set up for .38 special, 148 HBWC loads for Bullseye, and the other is my large primer press, usually set up for .45 ACP and 200 grain LSWC, again for Bullseye. That is Bullseye the activity, but both also use that powder too! I also have shell plates and dies for .40 S&W, and .44 SPL/MAG, plus another powder hopper so I can leave my bullseye settings on those when switching to load a different cartridge.

Just some brass depriming this morning, 357, 41 and 44 mag. 45 colt and acp, then some 40's and 9mm that the daughter and SIL shot while they were here earlier this summer. A few 6.5 creed, and 35 Rem.,and some 25-20's and 38-55's.
Giving the 40's & 41's the ss pin treatment at the moment.
Then the 357, 9's, 35R's and 38-55's will get the same.
And the 44, 45's and creed will be last.

I just finished up 25 45-70s. 12grs. of Bullseye behind a rcbs 405gr. cast rnfp. I tried 10 of these a couple of weeks ago and they shot a 1" group at 50 yds. out of my Henry H010G with the Skinner peep. They are running at about 1100 fps. I'm really impressed with this load because I have about 3 lbs. of Bullseye in the cupboard and only 1/2 lb. of Varget which cost $59.99 the last time I checked at my lgs. I also loaded up 5 with the Lee 340 rnfp with the same 12 grs. of Bullseye to try.

Bullseye in a 45-70!? That's impressive. Wouldn't have thought that. WTG!
