Lehigh Xtreme Penetrator for hunting?

Post by ~BumeRod~ » Sat Nov 19, 2022 12:20 am

This Underwood load is the most accurate factory load I have tried, thus far, out of my Big Boy X .45 Colt. Boy, does it thump! Wondering if anyone here has hunted with this bullet and what are your thoughts on effectiveness??? I know it is supposed to produce temporary and permanent wound cavities like a hollow point, but I would love to hear from someone that has actually used it. Any info appreciated!!!

The ones I tried in my 1911 destroyed a gallon water jug like no other 45acp I have ever shot. No real world hunting experience but I thought i would add my 2 cents.

Haven't tried it out, but I hear good things about those Lehigh bullets. And Underwood makes very consistent cartridges. You're probably getting a good bit more than the advertised 1400fps out of your Henry. If you have a chrono, you might want to check that. I wouldn't be surprised if you see around 1550 or better.

I have used their XTP .41mag for a few years, and thought about the Lehigh, but too pricey for me to switch. About $3/shot by the time you figure in shipping and tax. Double the cost of XTP.

I was told by one Gentleman, that swears by the Underwood loaded Lehigh stuff, to expect closer to 1700fps + out of my 17" barrel. I would have checked myself, but my Dad accidentally shot my chronograph a couple years ago. I am looking at cheap chronographs as we speak. I need to know what velocity I am actually getting. I can tell you, in terms of recoil, the Lehigh load I pictured above is the burliest load I have shot yet. Sharp, harsh recoil for a .45 Colt load.

That's very possible. I only have the 210grn .41 to go by, which chrono'd at 1738 (5rnd avg) out of my BBSC about 3 years ago. Advertised is 1560fps from a 6.5" test gun according to the company. When you get a chance, let us know. I'm sure everyone would appreciate it. :)

From my reloading log. Big Boy X carbine (17”5”)

.44 Mag hand loads 09/25/20
LEHIGH XTREME PENETRATOR 220 gr BEAR LOAD
Bullet diameter 0.429”
Starline brass (nickel) NEW
CCI 350 magnum
AA9 18.8 gr (Max is 18.9 gr)
COL 1.600”
Heavy crimp
1509 fps/ 17.4 SD
Note: Nice to process, seats evenly and smoothly. Lovely. Rounds feed OK in Henry (slight hiccup every now and then).

I do love these bullets but I don’t think you will see 1700 fps from that length barrel. But Underwood does magic with their Lehigh ammo. I carry their xTreme Defender factory ammo in my SP101 .327. I bought 200 of the Lehigh 9mm xTreme Defender bullets when they were on sale for $20 per 100 (!!!) at Midway USA, just to have in stock. I guess I am aLehigh fanboy, but I have never shot any animals.

Buy this and don’t look back, it is wonderful and it will work on a lever gun. As long as you don’t mess up the spacing, you can’t possible hit it with a bullet.

I have used mine for everything except short barrelled revolvers and semi pistols (with slides). It works fine on a Ruger Mk series.. It even works great for 177 pellets at 300 fps. It is perfect for use while tuning an air rifle.

9mm Lehigh super high speed video gel test. I expect you'd see similar tumbling/corkscrew in other calibers.
