where did Fall go .. ?!?!? .. we awoke to a beautiful but cold, 32 degree morning with scattered frost .... my hope was to spend some time working with our new Mini Chainsaw but my knees don't like cold temps .... with a projected high of 59, I don't know how much I'll get out today ....

It was 43° this morning while walking the dogs. They got playful with the cooler air. Right now at 8:30 it's still only 46°. We're supposed to get up to 68 degrees or so. I cooked bacon, eggs, toast and coffee.

My thermostat always shows several degrees warmer than the official temp. I have it attached to an exterior garage wall and the garage is not heated. But I think the wall retains heat so this morning I moved the sending unit temporarily placing it on top of my iron fence. The reading dropped from 37 to 31 which is more in line with the current official temp of 32.

This lead to a debate with my wife. She says the metal is colder than the air (to her touch) and I say the metal is the same temp as the air but it just “feels colder” to the touch. So as I type this she is reading some physics website to prove me wrong but so far she is failing. To me it just makes sense that the metal would be the same temp as the air but of course will retain cold as the air warms. So far she hasn’t been able to prove me wrong but time will tell. Sometimes these debates lead to wagers that can be a lot of fun.

Anyway, with a forecast high of 72 today I’m planning on hitting the golf course for the last time probably. On Friday rain and cold arrives with the possibility of some wet snow this weekend. A neighbor is hosting a chili cook off Sunday with outdoor eating and it might just be “chili weather”.

Jake, do you get much “winter in Sugarland”? I know some areas of Texas see a bit of snow, and some are blistering hot and others uncomfortably humid in summer. Is there a climatic “sweet spot” that you know of? I would guess closer to the Gulf but at a bit higher elevation if such an area exists. I’ve only ever been to DFW, but would love to explore more of Texas. I have a fishing guide friend in Corpus I’d like to visit.

No, metal or wood does not feel wind chill with the exception that it might cool down quicker when the temps drop.
With plants the wind can infiltrate the leave or foliage quicker, but they will still only cool down to the ambient temp.
Humans however experience what feels colder due to evaporation from the skin and drying from dry winds. That's called
wind chill.

"Regarding the question, “What’s the point of the actual temperature if that’s not what it ‘feels like’?” -- the simple answer is that the ACTUAL temperature is EXTREMELY important!

It applies to everything else besides wind impacts on exposed skin. Actual temperature determines whether water freezes or stays liquid. It determines whether we get snow or rain. Wind chill has no impact on any of these things.

Here’s an example: Some people may think that air at 40 degrees but with a wind chill of 25 (thanks to a strong breeze) might freeze water.

Not true.

The water will come to equilibrium with the air and settle at a temperature of 40 degrees, the ACTUAL temperature of the air. Being an inanimate, non-living thing, water is not impacted by wind chill."

It can be a little complicated.
Blow on hot soup, what happens?
A frostless refrigerator will chill and dehydrate produce.
The radiator in your car is cooled by a fan pulling cooler air through it.
With moving air there is faster heat transfer than in still air.

I bought this weather station and set it up yesterday. It doesn’t give me wind or rain but it does everything else. I want to buy two more remotes so I know the temperature in the garage and maybe the motor home.

My indoor temperature is set at 66F. The sun warms it up above that. Yesterday it was 75F inside. Of course it’s hung outside the furnace room wall. The room is only about ten square feet and the water heater and furnace are in the room. It’s common to find it 80F inside the furnace room.

The Black Rifle Coffee is 140F.

That looks like a nice weather station Gene. I have an old one that only gives temps
and humidity but I use it all the time. When we travel I take it in the motor home
and place units in the compartments. What kind is yours.

and humidity but I use it all the time. When we travel I take it in the motor home

La Cross. I put my old one in the RV but have to be inside it to read the basement temperature.
