30-30 Ammo... 170 160 140

Post by Cleveraction » Sun Sep 11, 2022 5:31 pm

Hi all!
I have been shooting Horandy Leverevolution 160 gr loads. I have also tried to Win 170 grain loads. The 160 grain loads seem to do better, but I am not sure if it is the weight or the monoflex tip (or a combo). I am interested in trying the Leverevolution 140 gr loads to see if they do even better, but they are so scarce that I wonder if they are discontinued.

Deer season is coming up so I would like to get all dialed in, I am happy to go out with the 160s as I am zeroed now and ready, but am curious about the 140s.

Have any of you tried the 140s, and if so, how did they compare to the 160s, and have any of you seen them anywhere? I typically pay up and buy via gun broker, but there are no 140s there either.

Thank you!!

for our 30-30 the choice has always been between 150's and 170's .... 150's for deer .... 170's for bear & boar .... I'm not a Lever Revolution fan so I cannot speak for their bullets .... Winchester/Nosler's Combined Technologies Ballistic Slivertips have proven to be excellent

Also...
Anyone try these?
Remington 27644 Managed Recoil 30-30 Win 125 gr Core-Lokt Pointed SP
I generally am using the 30 30 to 100 and I will let the deer walk this year unless I see the whopper... more likely I will be shooting pigs....

Thanks!

those Ballistic Tips are OK and will consistently deliver accurate, hard hits .... that said, my preference for 30-30 is the Ballistic Silvertip, part number 51165

Most of the 30-30's I have shoot the 170 gr the best, and
I don't care for the excess meat damage of the FTX bullets.
Never tried anything lighter than the 150's and they preform well on deer also.
But I load my own and love the Sierra and Speer 170 gr pills over some 3031.

I have heard several people that love the 130gr bullets for deer, but I've never used them myself.

Pretty much the same Randy, only using the Hornady 170's. Tried some coated cast 165's and didn't really get the accuracy. Back to the jacketed stuff.
I do have about 130+ Rem Core-lok 150's tho. Hmm.

Played with some 173 & 174 gr cast in one of the Winchesters, it did quite well with 9.5 grs Unique.

A few years ago I loaded up some of the Hornady 140"s that shot nice groups in my Remlin but not as well in one of my JM 336's. A friend of mine from California was satisfied with its ability to drop his buck. If you don't have to shoot non lead bullets I would go with other choices.

I have gotten the best groups out of Winchester 170 grain in my Henry.
