Henry to introduce shotguns in January 2017

Those old single shot break action and bolt action shotguns were used by those who were mainly hunters. The gun was a tool to get the job done. In these hunter's hands they were deadly on game. These hunters wanted a plate full of squirrels and gravy not an heirloom stowed in a bedroom closet to avoid getting scratches or rained on. These guns were most always handy and in reach if needed quickly. They were not worth much to others but priceless to the younger generations of the family years later. They weren't safe queens. They were in the woods on cool October mornings when real memories were being made by families and hunting buddies.
I believe the new single barrel break action shotguns will have to be at a very competitive price point to enjoy continued strong sales once the initial hoopla of their arrival subsides. I am excited myself and hope we again have a quality made in the USA single shot shotgun that will have strong sales for many years.

Good point about the pricing, jstraw. Around here, you can find a ton of those single shots in all gauges, in decent condition and at reasonable prices in the pawn stores.

My first gun that I owned was a Mossberg .410 bolt-action. Other guys with expensive 12 and 20 gauge shotguns thought a .410 was a joke until we went clay-pigeon shooting.

I don't remember missing a single clay and everyone was amazed. Then someone got the bright idea of throwing up two clays at a time. I managed to shoot the first one, work the bolt and then nail the other one.

At the end of the session all of the expensive big bores were leaning against the fence and the guys were taking turns with my humble little .410. There were several true believers of the ability of a .410 made that day.

I will be waiting for a sale price on the new Henry .410 lever. Sounds like it might also be an ideal home defense weapon and not penetrate neighbors walls.

Had a friend out here years ago squirrel hunting with a .410. I was VERY impressed. As i recall, the pellets didn't penetrate the meat; no damage at all.

I had a .410/.22LR over and under when I was a kid. Don't know who made it but I wish I still had it. I think a .410/.22WMR would be a better combo though.

Most of my .410 hunting was for squirrels. I lived I upstate NY and there were huge squirrel nests in the trees. The fall change of the maple tree colors was awesome.

My hunting buddy had a Mossberg bolt-action .22 and I would have him shoot a tree branch near a squirrel nest. That would make the squirrels scurry off in every direction and I'd be waiting with my trusty .410 and pick them off as they jumped from tree to tree. At the end of the day we'd split the take.

My dream gun in .410 was the Winchester model-42 pump.

Mine was more of a traditional look. Wouldn't mind having that firearm if it was made by Henry. I'm not a big Chiappa fan as most of their business is making firearm props for television and movies.

I was able to get a "quick glance" on the video of the 20-ga single-shot Anthony Imperato showed us. I liked the break-action config, and it has a (for me the best) front bead sight. So I wrote to him last weekend and asked some specific questions. He answered me with a "boiler plate" paragraph, similar to his intro on Henry TV. But he said he would follow up on my questions, too.

A day or so later I got this note from the Henry Gen Mgr with the info I asked about the barrel and chokes for this single-shot. And since I like wood furniture a lot, I was glad to see his comment about the s/g wood. Not a lot of info yet, but thought I'd post this here for everyone:

Our model H015-20 Henry Singleshot 20 ga will sport a 26" barrel with Modified choke supplied by Briley. This is one of the best chokes in the market today and it will bear the Henry name but is also compatible with Remchoke which are widely available in other choke options. This gun will have nice wood with the fit and finish we all expect from Henry. Thank you for interest in Henry. We look forward to serving you.

I appreciate the previous responses for past uses of single shot shotguns. What are the uses today? Best use I can think of today is teaching a new shooter with something safe and simplistic.

We've got a single shot New England Firearms 12 ga "Pardner" we have used as a general "farm" gun for the last 15 yrs. We also use it to shoot clays in a hay field (poor man's trap). It's about the most basic/simple shotgun I've ever seen. I think it was about $89 from Walmart back in 2000. It kicks like a mule because it is so light, but my daughter-in-law likes it because it is alot easier to hold and control than our over/under 12 ga Stoeger. I would think that a 20ga single shot Henry would also be a fun,lightweight gun to shoot at clays - especially for those who want a little less kick than a 12 ga. I'd consider getting one for clays and to mount over the fireplace if it looks like the other brass Henrys....

As tractordad wrote, I'd use if for trap (clay) shooting also. My Benelli PUMP 20-ga has a magazine cap of 5 rounds. But both trap ranges I shoot at allow only one round in the gun at any time. I'd think PUMP (that's what the name is for my s/g) would be heavier than a single-shot, but will need to see what Henry builds. That's why I'm thinking about one. Plus it's a Henry, and a first-time shotgun on the market. Cool!

My step son and I both have single shot .410s that we use for squirrels. I have used my dad's 20 ga single shot on pesky crows around the farm (in season of course)

There is in NY. I abide by it. They decimate the indian corn and a few others like the popcorn. They are smart birds.

We have a November 1st -- March 3rd open crow season here in MO.
No limit.

Along with the firearm types allowed, crows can also be taken by falconry.

Falconry, now that's cool. I can certainly see why agricultural areas would support crow hunting I just never considered it. A Henry shotgun would be perfect! Or a falcon!!!!
