45 Colt Range Day

Post by Headhog » Wed Jan 19, 2022 10:32 pm

Weather was looking good today so I packed up my Marlin 1894 Cowboy and Ruger NMBH and headed to the range. I put together some 45 Colt loads back in October, but for several reasons just haven't had a chance to test them out. The load I was testing was some 185 gr. LSWC bullet pushed along by 8.8 gr. of Universal. I decided to make these rounds to get rid of the wadcutters that I found were sitting under my bench from about 25 years. I used them, for my 45 at one time, when I shot bullseye pistol matches.

The first target is a 5 shot group at 50 yds. of my go to 45 Colt load, 250 gr. Missouri Bullets RNFP with 7.2 gr. of Universal.

The next target is the 185 gr. LSWC bullet. The group moved a little to the right, but that could been me. This range faces directly into the sun this time of year.

I was very please of the results of the test load with the 185 gr LSWC. Another plus is that this load shot just as well out of the Ruger NMBH. Also the recoil was very pleasant in the Ruger.

Overall it was a nice day at the range shooting and enjoying the 50 F weather. i managed to burn up 100 rounds of 45 Colt just having fun.

Actually that's what I used when I loaded them for my 45 ACP. Grouped very nicely from my old Colt 45 Government model. :D

I used up my last Red Dot about 2 years ago and haven't been able to get any since. :x

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Great shooting indeed. That's some nice leather work on the Marlin..I wonder if Ruger will bring those rifles back .

That leather comes from Jon Klein at Gun Stock Covers. He does a great job and provides a super product. I believe Ruger is on track to bring Marlin back. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they will reintroduce the 1894 later this year.
