And the Winner is ......

Post by Headhog » Mon Jul 05, 2021 8:20 pm

My son and daughter-in-law spent the weekend with us. On Saturday I packed up 3 lever action rifles, the Ruger Blackhawk and my son and I headed over to the range. We had the range to ourselves and we set up some steel at 15, 30 40 and 50 yards. Then I placed my 357 mag. Rossi R92 and Henry BBS on the bench, followed by the Marlin 1894 and Ruger in 45 Colt.

Even though my son is an avid shooter and marine, he had never fired a lever action. So after a brief tutorial I let him choose what he wanted to shoot and have at it.

First he picked up the Marlin 1894, loaded and fired 5 rounds. He was grinning from ear to ear. For comparison he tried the same round in the Ruger. After 5 rounds he commented on how the Ruger lets you know how much power that 45 Colt round had and how pleasant the Marlin was to fire.

Then he went onto the Rossi and finally the Henry BBS. He was having an absolute ball making that steel jump and ring. But, as I watched him change back and forth between firearms, it became clear he had a preference. He kept coming back to the Henry. So after he went through about 100 rounds of both 375 mag and 45 Colt he turned and said to me: "I've got to get me one of those Henry's." He could not stop comment on how nice the action was, the fit and finish and the overall appeal of the Henry.

We burned up about 300 rounds between the 4 firearms and had a great day at the range. But one thing was very clear, although my son liked all 3 lever guns, he was in love with the Henry.

I only started shooting pistol caliber lever actions at the beginning of 2020. Because of COVID my son and I haven't sent much time together in almost 2 years. After this weekend I do believe I have made a convert and he will be joining the lever gun ranks soon.

Congrats Paul. Good Father and son relationships are priceless. I never had that with my dad as the booze was more important. I hope he gets a Henry and more memories like this one are made.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Glad to read this Paul. Betting your son will be looking for a Henry .357 soon. And thank him for his service, please. Memories like those don't happen every day. Damn glad you two enjoyed the outing.

You're leaving something very important behind with your son. There's something special about fishing and shooting with your boys (and girls) that stays with them and it gets passed on through generations long after your gone.

Sounds like a very fun day -- my son also likes shooting lever actions. I have a few Henrys, and we both have Rossi .357s.
