OK, I sold a Henry to my neighbor who is like my son.
I purchased a Henry Varmint Special 17 a few years ago and my neighbor immediately fell in love with it.
He lives a mile north of me and does all my mechanical work on our RV and tractors. He has his own
diesel shop and has been a great friend for years, almost like another son. Course as a son goes, I'm
5 foot seven and he's six foot four. Kinda mutt and Jeff if you are familiar with them.
Anyway he texted me last night that he just picked off a racoon at eighty yards with it. Also two days
ago he blew a striped gopher in half. He loves it. I'm glad I let him have it.
He's a really good guy. Last week he went up to Lake Superior and brought us back some smoked fish.

Nice gesture Coop. I have done that with my neighbor as well. He watches my place when Im away in the winter and is always a helpful hand when needed. Cant ask for anything better. I have gifted him a Ruger PC Carbine in 9mm and another gun in the past. He also helped my wife alot at her assisted living facility when she had that.

Cool, that was indeed a very nice gesture. Was the gun accurate? I quite like it but I am spoiled by my CZ 455, completely unaltered, which is like a laser beam. Having a .17 HMR with less than stellar accuracy is not appealing to me…..

It was a tack driver out to a hundred yards for me and he's finding the same is true for him as well. I have a .220 SwiftJohn E Davies wrote: ↑Wed Jun 09, 2021 2:22 pmWas the gun accurate? I quite like it but I am spoiled by my CZ 455, completely unaltered, which is like a laser beam.

for my varmint rifle and the Henry was redundant, so he wanted it and he got it.

220 swift brings back memories. Had one in a Ruger 77 Varmint barrel. That caliber is great on prairie dogs to infinity and beyond

I had a very early model 77 220 Swift Varmint. I now have a Savage 112 BVSS-S which is a very heavy stainless fluted barrel single shot with super accuracy but not fun to carry. I need to quit playing with rim fires and get it out and blow the cob webs out of it. The 17 rimfires are good small varmint rifles with out having to sit and load ammo. I honestly prefer the 22 magnum on critters bigger than ground hogs. I like the 22 magnum with the 40 gr or the 30 gr V-max bullet over the 17 gr 17 HMR.

Ruger M77 Round Top, Varmint barrel.
Purchased it in 1979 or so. Still have it and load all my rounds for it as well.
I load them down to about 3900 fps and that provides a much longer barrel life.
Sight it on a three inch circle. At one hundred yards dead center, at 150 it will hit
the top as the bullet is still rising, at 200 it will hit the bottom of the circle.
Just put the cross hairs on the ground hogs neck and anywhere out to 200 yards
he's toast.
When I lived in Virginia I hunted the Shenandoah Valley with my best buddy all Summer and Fall.
Farmers would actually pay for our ammo to clean out those varmints and there were literally thousand.

It also has a Harris Bi Pod and a Luepold 12 power scope. I probably couldn't afford all that at todays prices.

Thats about where mine was velocity wise. IMR 4064 and those Sierra 52grhpbt match and the 53gr. It really liked those 2 bullets.
