I was actually surprised that a different revolver came into the picture; I thought you were quite settled on the 1872 open top model. But then I realized there are just too many choices out there!!
The "other good picture" you posted of the 1872 was the same one I saw on their web site. That's the one that was really a cool view of the sights.
Although I haven't looked at any videos as CT_Shooter did, I'd agree with him. My perspective is only from looking at your comparison pictures of the two revolvers, and my own experience with my first SP101 3.02"/.357 Magnum revolver. That revolver had a fixed rear sight, which is a notch in the top strap just in front of the closed hammer. For the life of me I had the most difficult time getting any reasonable sight acquisition. As much as I liked that SP101, I let it go. My current SP101 is a 4.25-inch "kit gun" with a rear adjustable rectangle slot sight. It works quite well with my elder eyes.
All that hooey said, I agree with CT-Shooter. I'd go with the sights on the 1872. That is a great-looking sight configuration on that revolver.
