Primer shortage update...

Post by fortyshooter » Wed Jul 22, 2020 3:03 pm

Just talked with a CCI rep. regarding primers and he said they are making them as fast as possible and there is still an 18 month
order backlog!

Who else makes primers? I imagine they are all in the same boat.

I use Remington Benchrest 7 1/2 for my black guns and just picked up six bricks. I like Winchester Match for the pistols, but none is available anywhere. I use CCI as a fall back.

Federal also makes a good primer. I've used several of them, tho I prefer CCI. All are spotty, just have to keep looking.

I use Winchester large pistol primers. Good luck so far with them.

I stocked up in April so not sure. But most of our factory stuff comes from the US anyway, so as you go we go. Firearm sales are pretty hot here too. At least the ones that are still legal.

I had to settle for CCI 300 primers because I can't find a Winchester Primer in any of my LGS's. I wonder if the LGS will restock because they were down to only 4 bricks of CCI 300 primers when I bought my two bricks but that tells me that maybe CCI is having a problem getting more out to the stores.

I believe with a lot of new gun buyers, they're needing ammo. Ammo makers probably trying to handle ammo out-put and components may be a back burner type situation. Maybe?

That and less we forget that SASS has become very popular, especially in my area here in Ohio of which I used to be a member and I knew of at least 4 such clubs within a short driving distance. None of those guys buy ammo, they roll their own.

Between existing hand loaders and the reality for main stream America that they cannot get ammo, based on what I have seen by RCBS, LEE, LYMAN, HORNADY, REDDING, they are all having record sales of one stage presses. I think that is why those of us who have loaded for years are having problems with components. If you notice, even certain caliber dies are showing back ordered.

I found Winchester Match primers yesterday here in AZ from a place in Phoenix I have bought powder from in the past. They are 2 hours away, too far to drive. Their price is $5.00 over what it should be, $10.00 shipping for a box of primers, and they want $37.95 haz matt. They can pound sand. Sign of the times I am afraid boys.

I just talked to a friend of mine and he found a place selling primers and they are only $ 80 per 1000. How's that grab ya? Tar and feather comes to my mind.

I'd like to think I'm set pretty good, but, finding myself not shooting as often. I don't want to dwindle my supply of components, tho I have plenty of handload on hand. Just sort of taking it easy, if you will. And I am NOT paying those extortion prices. That's ridiculous!

I have always used the Winchester primers and don't know what their backlog is like.

I can vouch for this. I've been a shooter for years, but took a spell the last decade for other interests. Recently getting back into it with all the craziness going on I was broadsided by the cost and lack of availability of ammo. I've never reloaded before but have a friend who does. I figured I may as well get into it now and if nothing else, be able to at least have ammo when I need some. I started out looking at presses but soon found out thru watching a lot of reloading videos that PRIMERS are the key. You can't reload without them and hardest to find. Other components can be hard to find at times, but the primers seem to be the holy grail when it comes to reloading. I gave up on looking at presses till I can find and build up a supply of primers. Till then, I'm just buying what I can of factory ammo so I'll at least have my brass. I have now about 400 rounds of 357 mag and about 750 rounds for my carry 9mm. That should do me if I can ever get set up for reloading. Plan on making a catch bag for my 9mm shooting. The way those things get flung all over the place, it can be pretty tedious trying to pick them up at the range. For those of you who have been reloading for years, I won't apologize for being the reason you can't get primers till I finally find them and place my order for 500,000

There is issues with the materials also to make the primers adding to the shortage. Its not all due to hoarding. Another reason why shooting some blackpowder in times like this is an alternative. I see there is still some #11 caps around.
