I just picked up my new BBSCC yesterday. I plan to wring it out at the range tomorrow.

I had on hand a supply of .357 mag and .38 special in all bullet wts. up to 158gr, including 125's and 140's. I test cycled both .357 and .38 XTP hollow points, poly coated 158 gr. semi wad cutters in .38 and .357 and.38 lead RN. All cycled smooth as silk including 125's and140's.

I have heard of people shooting silhouette doing what you are talking about when using 180-200gr projectiles, loaded to standard 357 OAL but using 38 or trimmed 357 cases.

I've shot at silhouettes but can in no way be considered a silhouette shooter .... what is the advantage or purpose of doing the above ..

As II mentioned, when using this particular Round nose Barry's plated in 357 cases when crimped even at the recommended 1.59" the crimp can be in front of the ojive. So the crimp does not really crimp sufficiently to keep the bullet from possibly being forced to back into the case during recoil.
Using the same bullet in a 38sp case the crimp can be on the bearing surface before the bullet ojive.

I find printed 38sp data from Sierra and RBSC using the same bullet weight ,(in swc, hp and sp) and powder charge.

Same reason I have heard for it being done. Allows you to crimp in the cannelure on a projectile where the cannelure is in the wrong place to give the correct OAL for 357 or on the bearing surface instead of over the SWC shoulder or the ogive. Gives a nice solid crimp and prevents bullet setback or creeping out.

A big word of caution here to those who may not understand what is being discussed in some of the last few discussions in this thread.

A few of the fellows are discussing the finer merits of loading cartridges for silhouette target shooting . They are discussing the finer points of loading a certain bullet style into a .38 special case instead of a .357 magnum case while still keeping it at a .357 level of power. They will also use it in a .357 magnum firearm only! To do otherwise would be dangerous.

I want to make that perfectly clear to anyone who may not know this. It is very dangerous. .357 magnum ammunition cases are slightly longer so that they will not load into the chambers of .38 caliber cylinder guns. The higher pressures of the .357 magnums could make the .38s explode, even modern .38s.

I'm sure it was not the intention of the posters to take the original thread to where it went, but I'd like them to talk about this in the reloading section. I'm shadowing this topic there.

Let's get this back to the original topic.

I have shot .38 specials in my BB steel carbine. The point of impact is much different than with .357 magnums. I find it so much different, that I have to use a very large piece of Craft paper. I haven't completed my testing either, but rather, just begun. I have found the poi for my 158 grn jacketed soft point, so at least an Adirondack deer might know it too next season.
