Surgery

I am pleased to share that my shoulder surgery was successful this morning. My guy has "been" my guy for thirty years, and went in and arthroscopically removed the arthritic build up in the right shoulder, a large group of bone spurs surrounding the rotator cuff, and because of their number, the scheduled ninety minute surgery took just under five hours.

During post op, I discovered that a side effect of the new nerve block treatment they use for pain management, is my right arm was flopping around like a limp noodle. I had no control at all. This will last 36 - 72 hours Fortunately, the pain reduction benefit should as well. It let the anesthesiologist use less general anesthesia, not put me as far under, and bring me back out quicker post op.

There is a good bit of pain this evening, but the doc asked me to rest for a couple days, then I can do simple tasks with the right arms as much as I can tolerate. In fact, doing so will help prevent the build up of scar tissue.

Guess I can wax cutting boards.

WOW .... just under 5 hours of surgery .... really good to hear it went well .... both of my last two shoulder surgeries combined took less than 2 hours and were done at an out patient surgery clinic .. .. the best unsolicited recommendation I and make is follow your Doctor's orders, don't rush the recovery period, and take the physical therapy seriously

Glad that is behind you now Jim! Hope your recovery is quick, but be careful not to build up un-wanted scar tissue.

Thanks for the report, Jim, and glad to hear it went well (if long) and that you've got a clear road to recovery. Sounds like a LOT of bone spurs, but good to have them all taken care of, no doubt!

Good advice above, as well, but sounds like you're an old hand at this stuff. Keep us posted!

Still a lot of pain with movement, and the main bandage they used left blisters at the edges of the pattern and took some skin when we removed it. That wasn't fun. Triple antibiotic is your friend.

Range of motion work isn't fun... ... But it's necessary.
I have already started. May be six or eight weeks before I can be mobile in the chair again. Folks forget the shoulder has to take the strain of braking on downhills, pushing on inclines, and emergency stops.

Follow up with the surgeon on the 29th. Start PT on the 30th. Due to the long drive each way to the VA they have again scheduled it in the next county over. At my request, they set it with the same therapist who did all the work with me after the fall that shattered my femur. She did a great job.
