I still get chills watching it again! Was a great time to personally witness the event as it happened on TV.
Had the gov't and NASA kept the ball rolling we could be on Mars by now and the moon would be a vacation spot!

letting our space program wither on the vine was a huge mistake .... advances in medical, scientific, computing and a host of other fields that stemmed from our space program were huge

Hey All,

It was quite a time. I remember it well I was 14 or so. I have a personal connection to the Apollo moon landings. My uncle was a flight controller for lunar experiments at mission control. He was also quite the scientist...

I had an uncle that worked at NASA Research Center at Langley Field..Hampton Va. back in the 60's.
He seemed to be quite a few steps ahead of the curve for his time.
When he built a new home during that time he built it so air tight the fireplace would not function without a window cracked open and the walls were
6 inches thick for extra insulation. This when heating fuels were cheap.
His job there was to construct scale models of the next generation of aircraft for testing.

I took a tour thru the facility they allowed open during an open house and it was fascinating to go in some of the shop areas
and huge wind tunnels!

As an Air Traffic Controller on the East Coast our job was to reroute aircraft around Cape Canaveral whenever there was a launch.
(Even the secret ones). So in 1976 I and my trainee flew down to Florida to take in the sites and one of them was the Cape.
We drove our rented car up to the main gate and got out. The guards immediately informed us it was a restricted area and no
one was allowed in. We in turn showed them our IDs and told them what we did for a living. One of them went inside and in
a few minutes came back out and told us to park the car and wait inside with them.

A govt car came out and a gentleman in a suit asked us to come with him. WOW! We got the VIP tour. We went from the
assembly building to the training quarters to the control room and even to the launch pad. We even got a tour of the
Astronauts quarters. It was great!

I tried taking a picture of the landing and first step on TV. Didn't turnout. The TV screen looked blank, but I got a great picture of the TV set
