A neighbor got a custom knife for Christmas and had shared it when he stopped to get the mail. (All their boxes are in front of our place.) I told him then if he decided he needed a sheath to let me know. He and his dad had helped us out a couple times. It's what neighbors do around here. He stopped by a few days ago and said the knife maker decided he wasn't up to the task of making sheaths yet, so if I could...

We discussed what he wanted, and I told him I would give it a shot. He wanted the sheath to be angled, so it wouldn't dig into his spine when seated. He intended to wear it in the middle of his back. He dropped off the belt it would most often be worn on. I made up two so he could choose the one he likes the most. I'll toss the other in the sheath box to use with one of my smaller knives. If neither trips his trigger, I'll take his input and knock out another.

The first one is a pancake style made from a 6 ounce leather, somewhat thinner, and lighter and stained darker like the belt he dropped off. It is angled about thirty sixty degrees and won't dig into the seat as it only protrudes about an inch below the belt.


The second design is a more traditional rolled over design, made from 10 ounce leather and is much stiffer, angled at about forty five degrees. I used natural watco oil and antiqued. He had said a natural finish would work as well. Miss T likes this one.

The knife is NOT one of mine, and the friend who made the knife did make the damascus blank as well. Excellent work on the damascus.

I'm getting better at it. A single missed strike with the stamp can thrown the entire line off. It takes practice. The belt the neighbor dropped off had that same basketweave pattern on it. Luckily I had the same exact stamp in my tool bar.

I like how much my hand stitching has improved. I wasn't worried too much about the belt loop stitching on the back, although I want to improve there as well. But the line stitching, especially on the second sheath is looking so much better these days. I couldn't sew these on the machine due to the loops on the back. "I" like them. I look back at my stitching on the first attempts and realize how much the practice over the years has helped.

If you are talking about my maker's mark stamps on the back of the sheaths, yup.
I didn't at first. Eventually I would carve my initials. Then I ordered the smaller stamp. It was really hard to read the "brokenolmarine" on that one. Last year I broke down after encouragement from friends and family, and ordered the larger stamp. My biggest problem is remembering to use it.

You bet, you deserve taking credit for your fine work! Plus your maker’s mark is a nice piece of work itself.

Just so you know, the neighbor came by today and picked up his knife, belt and chose the lighter colored sheath made from the stiffer leather. He liked them both. He was very happy.

I like the style of the lighter one as well. Great work as usual Sir.
