a few minutes ago we saw a Red Shouldered Hawk perched high in a treetop on the back edge of our property --- https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Red ... d_Hawk/id --- for us this was a first .... its termed a medium size hawk but it looked pretty dang big with a heavy body and wingspan of over a yard

Congrats on the sighting and the pic. We have them around here, but not too common, given our forests are mostly coniferous, not deciduous.

Raptors are magnificent creatures. Sharp eye for you to spot that one. they are rather common around here. I love to watch them when perched, flying, hunting and even eating. We hear the owls almost every evening when we're up at the cottage.

We have a variety of hawks and falcons around here, and also owls.
We have a couple or three that we can hear most evenings also, Mark.

Will see a Bald Eagle or two from time to time also.

Living by the CT River provides daily opportunities to watch a variety of hawks, eagles, osprey, vultures, and other predator or scavenging birds. Several years ago, I happened to watch as a very surprised Hawk (probably Cooper's Hawk) followed a very smart (but much smaller) bird into a Trumpet Vine, where it became trapped. If I hadn't have seen it happen and helped to free it, the Hawk would likely have died there. I shot a video while releaseing it.

A couple of years ago, I was also lucky enough to have a nesting pair in a tall tree just above my backyard pond. They came to the pond several times a day to bathe, preen, and learn how to hunt. So cool.
