What Is Your Favorite Shooting Distance
I have had a great time shooting my two Henry's. To begin with, I sighted them in at 25 yards to get the windage right and an approximate elevation. Once I was happy with the sights at 25 yards, I moved to 50 yards to refine my windage and to get a better read at a longer distance on the elevation.
I now shoot my Henry's often at 100 yards, after further adjustments on elevation, and I find that at 100 yards hitting an 8" metal target is relatively easy if the rifle is supported, but more of a challenge standing. Standing I can hit the target at 100 yards perhaps 70% of the time.
It may be that with more practice I can become a better shooter at longer distances (no scopes so far).
How do you you do with accuracy at 100 yards standing, and is that a favored distance you like to shoot?

Re: What Is Your Favorite Shooting Distance
given a firearm capable of doing so, my favorite distance is whatever the longest happens to be for the place I shooting .... any more, 100 yards is pretty much the longest in our area .... for the last few years, I do 90+% of my long gun shooting from a rest .... that is true for hunting and target shooting .... the vast majority of my handgun shooting is with a Redhawk 44 mag and is done from a rest .... with it I prefer 25 to 50 yards but will not hesitate to send rounds 100+ yards down range

Re: What Is Your Favorite Shooting Distance
Mine is at 50 yards with open sights or the scope, with the .30-06, .44 magnums or the .22's. But I should really soon be shooting the .22 Henry Classic Lever action with the factory sights at 25 yards if possible. And probably the Golden Boy also. It isn't getting any easier at 71, but I like a challenge.

I used to love shooting the 300yd silhouettes with the .308.
These days 100yds for .308, 50 yd rimfire and 30-40yd airgun....................

Re: What Is Your Favorite Shooting Distance
For .22LR unscoped, 25 and 50 yards; scoped, 50 and 100 yards.
For my unscoped Rossi .357 and my Chiapp M-1 9mm carbines, 50 yards.
For my scoped Ruger American Ranch 5.56, 100 yards.
And the 100 yards is all we have. I don't know of a range anywhere in the area that has anything longer.

Re: What Is Your Favorite Shooting Distance
WS, for some reason, I never see public or semi public ranges beyond 100 yds.
The range I was referring to was private, invitation only. Which is fine, but I'm just ready now to jump through the hoops, and the old man I went with has passed.
But 300 yds is really "getting your moneys worth" out of something like a 30-06, 270 and the like. And with the silhoettes, it's just hit or miss and no targets to set up

Re: What Is Your Favorite Shooting Distance
Shooting from my back porch with rim fire only most of my shooting is from 33yds. out to fifty when the lower part of the lot is not wet. I can move my bench to get more distance than the 33-35yds. but can't move my bullet trap as it was put in there with a front end loader. It needs a up grade now but what is maybe going to happen in my area may end my shooting on my ground. If my shooting rim fire on my ground ends I will have a lot of rifles for sale.
Re: What Is Your Favorite Shooting Distance
Interesting thread...thanks for posting the question.
For my shooting, the ranges on the ranges range between 7-100 yards.
At the MDC range, there are fixed yardages of 7 & 15 yards for pistol/revolver, and 25, 50, 75, 100 yards for rifle. At my two friends' home ranges, I can do any intermediate distance I choose. I've tried the Henry .357 at +100 yards, but most of the shots don't make the black steel sing that far out. When I practice HD/PD shooting with my .357 revolver, I go for 7-15 yards, but have shot it up to 50 yards.
In the last few years, I've enjoyed shooting at a longer distance with 12-ga s/g slugs using steel silhouette or rectangle targets. Mostly I set targets up between 200-240 yards; and the prep/practice for deer hunting with a s/g is 50-65 yards. Hope to try more of the longer distance shooting again this coming summer. It's a neat challenge, and a lot of fun.
My favorite shooting distance? Long-distance with a shotgun.

Re: What Is Your Favorite Shooting Distance
The private range where I shoot has targets out to 200 yards, but I rarely ever shoot at that distance except with a Sharps target model in 45-70.
I have not tried a rimfire rifle at that distance, but I may set up a 8" steel target at that range and see if I can hit it. Maybe bench rested with a spotter to see if the target moves if struck might work because I don't think I would be able to hear the target getting hit at that range even with my ear protection volume turned up high. Sounds like a real challenge and good fun.

I never shoot 7 yds and 15 yds every blue moon . The last time I shot 15 yds was with this a smooth bore muzzle loader with NO SIGHT below .. In Tx I had to shoot 15 yds to get my CCW 6 yrs a go . I shot all 10 rds from the waist in under 5 seconds and got the highest score that day . 7 and 15 yds are point shoot , no aiming needed unless you are shooting snakes . The Iver Johnson is a rapid fire point and shoot .

The range where I shoot has 25, 50, 100, 200 and 250 yards. No metal targets, just wooden backboards to replace often. I enjoy the 50 yards, and shoot off hand standing.

I do aim at 7 yards and don't shoot as well as you did at 15 from the waist. Shooting like that only happens in my dreams and may never happen at the range. But, I do dream!tx gunrunner wrote: I shot all 10 rds from the waist in under 5 seconds and got the highest score that day. 7 and 15 yds are point shoot, no aiming needed unless you are shooting snakes.

Re: What Is Your Favorite Shooting Distance
I like to shoot between 21 feet to 150 feet at my range. I like paper targets and metal gongs too. I enjoy other targets but I mainly shoot paper targets of various types and the metal gongs.
My husband belongs to the Big Sky PSC where he used to compete weekly when his work schedule allowed it. They have other targets to use too.
My range in Western Montana:
http://www.wmfga.org/
Back east:
When I first got into shooting, I mainly shot at an indoor range by my gun store. It was in another county and over 30 miles one way from my rural house. Later on, my girl friend's (She was not a shooter.) husband asked me to join and sponsored me at his Sportsman's Club which was much closer to my rural home but in another county. They held events year round and it was all outdoor shooting. Nice range and good people there too.
I did more handgun shooting than rifle shooting from the late 90's until the last several years where I only shot/shoot specific rifles. So my s/a revolver, d/a revolver and semi automatic pistol FORMER shooting was up close and personal AND general plinking up to 150 feet away.

Cate,
The Montana range you belong to looks like a wonderful facility. What a view!

A lot of work has been completed on the range since I moved out here too. More is being done now too.
My Montana born and raised husband told me about the range since he joined it way back when.
We have friends from across the country, all over MT and in the WA state area and they consider it one of the top rifle ranges in the Pacific Northwest.

Our range goes up to 400 yards, but I never shoot past 100. As stated earlier, usually at 50 yards.

Re: What Is Your Favorite Shooting Distance
I shoot mainly rimfire rifles and its at either 25 or 50 yards. After that the rimfire seems to be a crapshoot. I do have a few CZ's in .17HMR that is good at 100 yards but even them I shoot at 50 most days.

Re: What Is Your Favorite Shooting Distance
I normally shoot at 50 yds. I like to shoot at 100 when I'm seeing well enough. The only time I shoot 25 is with handgun or just trying to find sights on paper the 1st time.

Re: What Is Your Favorite Shooting Distance
I have many friends who enjoy shooting .... some have experience in precision, competition shooting but none that I know of are more than casual, recreational shooters at this time .... I've mentioned this before and find that most people who are new to going to a shooting range don't really realize how far away 50 much less 100 yards really is .... I've heard many brag that they can hit at several hundred (pick a number) yards and my experience has been that very few people can really do so .... given our equipment (rifles) I'm completely comfortable at 50 yards and don't have heartburn when shooting at 100 yard .... I have shot at longer ranges but there is a difference in being willing to and being in a comfort zone ...Deadwood Dutch wrote:Our range goes up to 400 yards, but I never shoot past 100.
