I have a Henry Small Game rifle in 22lr and I am very happy with it but...
This evening at the shooting range, I noticed that the trigger pull was much heavier then it used to be.
Do I need to take the rifle apart to clean it or is it something else ?

How much have you shot it? Have you taken it apart and cleaned it recently?

Most likely - and it was probably not very clean when new.
A good disassembly, COMPLETE cleaning and inspection of the parts for any burrs or imperfections, polish them if necessary and it will result in about a 100 + % improvement!

Agree with Mistered. Cleaning always seems to do good things to the workings (efficient operation) of a rifle, revolvers, shotguns, etc. --- all these loud and noisy tools. The other great benefit is that you know what you have then. First time I completely dis-assembled my 12-gauge pump shotgun, I learned much, and had fun doing it. And I was actually surprised how clean it was after many shells sent downrange. It even felt "easier" to shoot since I knew that inside all was A-okay.

I found my 22 LR GB Carbine quite dirty out of the box, so cleaned it first. Lots of machining crud. But shot great after a simple cleaning.

I also noticed a strong trigger pull, so when I broke her down to send the receiver to Andy at Skinner Sights for his drill/tap, I took the time to work her up.

But the side effect is the trigger pull dropped almost a pound!

Since then I've shout about a thousand rounds, with no cleaning inside. But I do pull several patches through the barrel from the receiver end after every outing to the range.

BTW- now, with practice, I'm shooting 10 rounds inside a dime at about 30 yards!

BillyBoy, I checked your post with photos. Thank you for the info.

Cleaning the gun was not the solution for the heavy trigger.
The problem was that when I hold the lever tight against the stock, the trigger will touch the trigger guard.
I taped a small piece of wood on the lever so it can not touch the stock and the problem with the trigger is solved.
Next time I clean the gun, I will make the trigger half a millimeter shorter and that should be enough to keep it free from the trigger guard.

Easy on the metal removal but a simple fix!

Jkrijt, do you have the large loop lever? The reason I ask is the large loop is on my SGC and I could firmly clamp the lever to the stock without it impinging on the trigger. Is it possible the lever is slightly bent? It just seems unusual that everything was working good before and now it’s not. Maybe HRA would send you a new lever rather than removing material off the trigger, small amount as it is. Best of luck in returning it to acceptable working order.

Good point.
You might want to take some time and look at your lever in relation to how far it 'closes' - It's possible all you may have to do is slightly 'relax' the bend of the lever to not close as far.

I don't know. It may be bent but that would be strange because I handle it very careful

Sending it to Henry and back will take a long time because I live in the Netherlands. I would rather keep it here. Maybe I just leave it as it is now, with my simple low tech solution. I have some lever action matches comming that I don't want to miss.

It might have been this way FROM the factory and never properly fitted. It wouldn't be the first I have seen.

OP suggested maybe Henry would send a new lever to YOU - with no need to send the rifle back.

Jkrijt, I’m glad that you found a solution that works. It still can’t hurt anything to request a new lever from HRA. They’ve provided some amazing, above and beyond service for their customers.

After I met the Dutch Henry importers at a shooting match, they took care of my problem. New parts are ordered at Henry and are now waiting for customs clearance.
