My First Henry

[Sir Henry]

I traded a No. 5 Jungle Carbine for this H001 soon after they came out. It is a three digit serial number Classic made in BKYN N.Y. It still has the original plastic barrel band and front hanger/sight. The barrel band screw is different is recessed more so it stills out the other side.
The scope is a vintage Weaver V22-A.

It really does have a nice balance. It has the original stock on it. The stocks on my SGC’s have been replaced with a youth stock.

Yes it has north of 20,000 rounds. That was where I stopped counting. It might have twice that by now. I have a 10/22 with more than 100,000.

I contacted Henry with my serial number and they just replied saying it was made on March 24, 1997. I hadn't realized it was one of the first ever made. Only a few hundred were made before mine.

Henry Repeating Arms was started by Louis Imperato and his son Anthony Imperato in Brooklyn, New York in 1996. The first model produced was the Henry H001 Lever Action .22 and the first shipments were made in March 1997. The original corporate motto was "Made in America and Priced Right". Henry Repeating Arms takes its name from Benjamin Tyler Henry, the inventor who patented the first repeating rifle in 1860, known as the Henry rifle. There is no affiliation or lineage to Benjamin Tyler Henry or to the New Haven Arms Company, who sold the original Henry rifle from 1862 to 1864. Anthony Imperato secured the trademark to the Henry name in 1996.

Yes it has all of the original parts. When they first came out the biggest complaint was the plastic parts. Henry later changed to all metal except for the inner tube magazine spring guide and they offered free metal replacements. Most were exchanged out in the early years.

It is now wearing a better scope in anticipation of going to the range.

But to these "old-fashioned" eyes, the vintage Weaver V22-A is the better-looking scope on your rimfire! Still remember thinking that very same thing when I first saw it several years ago. Your classic Weavers sure do finely dress up those Henrys.

I hated putting the Nikon on it because of the looks but that Nikon is so much brighter and with higher contrast in low light situations.

I agree on the looks versus performance, but for me, performance wins out in the end. I honestly think that if someone re-introduced a steel tube 3/4" 22 scope with modern optics, it would be a great seller. Unfortunately, the scope market is going more and more to the tactical style. Even finding a gloss scope to match some of my vintage 22s is tough, now.

My vintage Weavers can’t match modern designs and glass. The coatings they used turns milky after 40 years. They might have the clarity but not the contrast or brightness. I looked through both of these scopes in my living room at dusk. It was very dark and the Weaver was almost useless.
