Hi All, I own a scoped HOO1, which I still love, but recently recently shot a friends H001TLP. I was totally surprised and impressed with this rifle. I was amazes at how easily and quickly I could hit the target, how easy and effective the sights are. The larger lever is nice too. I really wish now I had known how good these sights are. On my Henry I did not like the factory sights and it was hard for me because of my vision. Without reading glasses I can’t see any rifle rear sight very well, but with the ghostly skinner sight I can shoot just fine. I highly recommend that if you are planning on using the Henry with open or factory sights, that you check these out. To me it seems like it takes the H001 to the next level.

Does anybody have any suggestions on what I can do with my H001 at this time? Thanks!

I have the SGC (H001TLP), too. And it's my only Henry rifle. I cannot agree more with your assessment of this Carbine.

The stock sights configuration it carries is the only way I can shoot a rifle well. My challenged eyes agree. In terms of Henrys and iron sights, for me this configuration is the top level.

Hi Pilsner, welcome to the forum. I have a H001-TLP as well, which I bought over the other versions mainly for the big loop and Skinner sights. I now have a .357 configured the same with Skinner receiver peep and big loop. Both are the 16” Carbine versions.

You can mount a Skinner peep in place of your factory rear dovetail, (which I would consider on a 20” barrel), or get the same receiver mounted Skinner as the TLP comes from the factory with. You can send your receiver cover to Andy at Skinner and he will drill and tap it for his sight too. The big loops are also available from Henry as well, so you can more or less turn your standard Henry rifle into a similar rig as the Small Game Carbine. It is an amazing set up that shoots really really well.

I’m a Pilsner drinker too by the way!

You have discovered what a lot of Henry owners found out about Skinner sights - they really improve the sight picture for less than perfect eyes. You could put a Skinner rimfire groove rear sight on your H001 that is even a little nicer than the sight on the H001TLP - if you want to spend the $.

Skinner is the way to go! Absolute no-brainer!

I strongly suggest the receiver mount sight. Not sure if your has the rail, but if it does, Skinner has the correct sight. The advantage of the receiver mount is the longer sight radius- my carbine has a 19.250 sight radius, and by running the numbers through the Skinner calculator, I chose a .500 high front sight, which is spot on. But as Andy points out, the actual height is highly dependent on your ammo and shooting style. I use CCI Mini Mags.

Be sure to order the two small setscrews to plug the tapped holes in the barrel, just under the buckhorn. Also, order the dovetail plug to fill the buckhorn hole, either blank or with a tapped boss to store a spare aperture. I use both .090 and .070, and store the .090.

Aside from the style of windage adjustment, I don’t see how it’s nicer, but that’s up to the individual. How tall a front sight did you need to go with? It looks like the rear peep is quite high.

I have the Henry SGR (small Game Rifle). It comes with a Skinner sight already installed. Tried to sight it in for 25 yards and the front sight was to short. Henry sent me a taller sight for free, I asked them to send me a .600 because I read on a forum that would be the correct size. It was not, that sight was to tall. I ended up putting a Lyman .494 globe sight on it and works great. Really helps those fading aged eye's.

We went with a .494" Lyman Globe on the front - this sight setup really works well for us.

I have Skinner peeps on both rifles I have. One came with the SGR and I purchased a Lo Pro for my. 357. I did not change the front sights on either. The other day I was ringing a steel torso target at 100 yrds using my .357, much to my and my companions amazement. First time shooting at 100 yrds.

I would expect you to be gonging a torso at 100 yds with a $3.00 B.B. gun given your credentials Mr Wiz!

I’ve got a 6” round gong I’m going to take out soon with my .357 Carbine with Skinner sights. I hope to be able to try it at 50, 75 and maybe 100 yds. I’m not terribly optimistic about hitting it with the .357 at 100, but my 7mm should ring it.

I would say probably 50 plus yards that the front sight on the SGR would not need changed. I don't know though, because all my plinking is done at 25 yards. At 25 yards to get on target I definitely had to change the front sight. On all three lever 22's that I have. The levers that I have with Williams rear peeps I have not had to change the front sight on. The Williams FP peep sight will sit lower than the Skinner but the receiver has to be drilled and tapped. Hassle. My Marlin came with the receiver drilled and when I bought my BL-22 Browning someone already had it drilled and tapped for the Williams peep.
Really Skinner is the way to go and just replace the front sight for 25 yards.
