CCI Mini Mag 22LR, 40 gr, Copper Plated Round Nose?
CCI Mini Mag 22LR, 40 gr, Copper Plated Round Nose?
In general, is it worth the extra penny or two per round to shoot the copper plated 22LR vs. the lead round nose? Just seems like that rifled barrel is an awful narrow shaft and could collect lots of lead shavings and that the copper would run much cleaner.
Speaking of clean, seems like the CCI in general has a good reputation and feeds/performs well, no?
Am THIS CLOSE to pulling out the Visa card on a SGC, so gotta shop for ammo, right?
Any opinions on CPRN vs. LRN?

Traditionally, that copper washed treatment is added to bullets on the high velocity loads to reduce leading, yes, though how effective or even needed it is would be tough to say. As long as your barrel's chamber and rifling are cut, properly, you shouldn't get much leading with the SV lead rounds, though. For instance, CZ 22 LR barrels run tight bores compared to most brands of 22 LR rifle barrels and we rarely shoot anything but lead SV ammo through ours, but, even so, leading has never been an issue. In fact, I've shot target guns with thousands of rounds of LRN bullets without cleaning the bore and there was no discernible loss of accuracy due to leading. Don't loose any sleep over the possibility of lead build-up with SV ammo. It's really a non-issue. You need to choose your ammo based on other factors such as accuracy and reliability.
Yes, CCI is good stuff. We feed our guns a lot of the CCI SV lead rounds. Rarely shoot HV, anymore.

Thank you, NCG. I may try a few boxes of the CCI and see how it goes. The good news is, there's lots of ,22LR out there, it's readily available and pretty darn affordable.
I don't know that I'm enough of an aficionado to detect some of the subtleties, and all that I've read says that the Henry .22s eat just about everything, so I'll just work my way through some of the brands and see what happens.
Thanks again!

You're welcome, as always. Working your way though all the brands and loads to see what your rifle likes, best, is part of the fun. As a general rule of thumb, your most accurate loads will most likely be with SV target grade ammo, but exceptions are frequent enough to not assume this. For instance, I've had some 22 rifles and handguns that shot the CCI Mini mag 40 grain loads just as well as the expensive match grade SV ammo. Even bulk ammo like Federal Automatch can surprise you. Try them all.
Re: CCI Mini Mag 22LR, 40 gr, Copper Plated Round Nose?
Yup, Esquared, that is spot-on advice from NCG....."Try them all." I have 19 different configs of .22LR in my stock.
And as far as your comment from what you've read that "Henry .22s eat just about everything." My SGC has yet to say "no" to any of these various .22LR brands I've used. Certain that I haven't tried them all that are out there, but I've worked on it for sure! Like that bunny, the SGC keeps on goin', and goin', and goin', and goin', and goin', and goin' ---->
If you do pull out that cc to bring home an SGC, consider getting the Henry Spee-D-Loader for range use. I've found it to be an excellent tool, and especially appreciate using it in cold weather (duh, what's cold weather, right?). It was a very good buy.

Thanks, Bob, it's great to hear that you're also experiencing good results with lots of brands. I've read good things about the Spee D loader and even saw one YouTube video where a guy was using one (it wasn't a Spee D video, he just happened to have one; never even mentioned it), and it was striking how long it was. Ever hear anything about this one by Marbles?

Same concept, but configured differently. With the SGC holding just 9 rounds, I would load 5/4 in alternating tubes. I dunno. Lots of flavors of ice cream out there, huh?

I think the SGC holds 12 rnds of 22LR - the SGC in 22Mag is the one that holds 9 rounds.ESquared wrote: With the SGC holding just 9 rounds, I would load 5/4 in alternating tubes. I dunno. Lots of flavors of ice cream out there, huh?

Yep, just double-checked. You're absolutely correct. Ordered the Marbles version anyway. AND the .494 Lyman! Thanks again! Now, on to the actual rifle. Found one at Academy, for $399.99, free ship to store, no CC fees and no FFL transfer fee. Just have to pay sales tax (about 9%). Not going to go crazy about splitting a $10 bill, but a Twenty buys lots of .22 ammo. Still shopping!tractortad wrote:I think the SGC holds 12 rnds of 22LR - the SGC in 22Mag is the one that holds 9 rounds.ESquared wrote: With the SGC holding just 9 rounds, I would load 5/4 in alternating tubes. Magazine capacity on the SGC is 12 rounds for .22LR. When I load up my Spee-D-Loader, I load only 10 rounds per tube = 80 rounds. This ammo takes about 2-3 seconds to drop into the Henry magazine. I use 10 rounds for an easy count so I don't dryfire too often.

Ordered! Academy touts "Free Ship to Store", so this seemed great. $10.95 S&H showed up on my Order Summary.

If you got a SGC for $399 and then got 10% off that price, you did very well, ESquared - congrats.ESquared wrote:Ordered! Academy touts "Free Ship to Store", so this seemed great. $10.95 S&H showed up on my Order Summary.

Just a note to add about the Speed-D-Loader. They make five sizes, I got the 11 round one years ago. Works great for my mare’s leg. I can drop 15 shorts in it and shoot all month.
This link is to Midway where all but the short tube are out of stock but give you the details of the different sizes.

Esquared if you google up ammoseek.com you can find all kinds of 22 ammo. I really like CCI mini mags but I also use some federal high velocity. Ammo Seek gives you a directory of online sellers of 22 ammo and there current price or sale price. Just be sure you compare freight costs. Some places list cheap prices and over charge for freight to make up the cheap advertised price.

Re: CCI Mini Mag 22LR, 40 gr, Copper Plated Round Nose?
I only have the one little 22 lr. Sir Henry has a couple more at least. One that he built with a .22 magnum barrel. Henry doesn’t make them that way yet. Sure wish they would.ESquared wrote:I think Seabee is the first forum member I've come across with a Mare's Leg. How do you like it and what do you do with it? I just use it for plinking at the range. But have no doubt that if I needed to put small game on the table it would get it done. It is a ton of fun to shoot and takes up very little space at the range.

I've found my .22's (Ruger 10-22, Sig P229 and Marlin 783) work really well with Federal 40gr plated. I think the Federal # is 710:

I've never had a leading problem in a .22. The outside lube seems to prevent that.
I do find copper spits less in my revolvers.
CCI is my go to for acceptable accuracy without trial and error. I usually use the mini-mags. Sometimes, I will find an ammo that shoots more accurately in a given rifle, but can't say I recall any that should CCI poorly.
