New H001

Post by tinnerjohn » Sat Mar 03, 2018 8:20 am

My son gave me a new H001 for Christmas, now that the weather is getting better I may finally get to shoot it. Any suggestions for needed cleaning/lube before I start burning ammo? I've had a lot of .22's but never a brand spanking new one. Almost don't want to shoot it! John

Shoot it! Just check the barrel for debris. To me they come with too much oil and I usually wipe the inside down. Taking the receiver cover off is easy. Just remove the tang screw to let the buttstock come off and then remove the four receiver screws. Pull the hammer back and it comes right off.

Welcome! I clean my bore sorta regularly, but othernthan that, Sir Henry is right. Shoot it!

Oh, once a year, I do take it apart and clean up he inside. Even that, Henry says is not necessary.

Welcome to the forum - I would clean that barrel before shooting your new H001 - you may be amazed at how much crud is in there. All nine of our Henrys had really dirty barrels when new. Henry makes a great 22LR rifle, but they don't really clean em before they ship em...

Welcome from Nevada!

When mine came home I gave a fairly light bore cleaning and then went out and shot. Really don't think you need any more than that.

They shoot sweet and are butter smooth in the action department. Shoot it frequently and good job on raising your son to honor his dad is such a fine fashion!

Congrats on your new H001. I still smile every time I pick up one of mine. I installed a Skinner barrel mount peep sight and really like it.

They are fun to shoot I just picked up a second one.

I like the bore snake for light maintenance cleaning. I pull one through the bore of a new gun to eliminate any machining debris and excessive factory oil. I pull it through with a bit of oil on the tail after shooting.

Oh. Now, I see that my receiving a dirty barrel on a new gun was nothing out of the ordinary. Maybe, dirty is a reality term? However, it does cleanup with some elbow grease. At least, that is how my H009 has been.

Nonetheless, welcome, congratulations and happy shooting!

Clean the barrel or run a bore snake through it and shoot it. Keep plenty of ammo on hand because it is habit forming.

My first Henry rifle was the H001. It gave me a fever I could not get over - even after purchasing more Henry's. My grand kids still like the H001 best.

About 15 years ago, I bought a Rossi puma in .454 casual. I brought it home to clean it and it took around a half hour to clean. The powder in Brazil must burn as dirty as black powder.

I still haven't shot this thing, but the outside is half wore out from handling and polishing. I ran dry patches through the barrel, after 3 or 4 they came out clean, not as bad as I expected from some of the comments I read online. Should I run some through with some Hoppes now?

I have trouble with buckhorn sights, so I have a Williams Fool Proof on the way. I hope to get it on, sighted in and burn up a bunch of ammo real soon if the weather and my work schedule cooperate! John
