When hammers still had wooden handles I would drill a shallow hole about one half inch in diameter in the end of the handle opposite the head.Light a candle and let it drip into the whole until it is flush with the end. When it is time to drive a finish nail into some Maple,Oak or hard Pine, stick the pointed end of the nail into the wax and proceed to drive it.

Yes, especially for those Carpenter Bees I've been at war with!!
I shoot carpenter bees with a 38 special. Loaded with 2 grs of Bullseye. A cardboard wad. Fill the case with #9-10 or #12 shot with over wad of cardboard.
Love shooting them flying and this load won't damage the tin when I shoot them under my shed.
