Polished Mag Tube

Post by leverjc » Thu Mar 10, 2022 12:50 pm

The mag tube on my Frontier was so rough that when I would wipe it down the patch would leave small tuffs of cotton stuck on the tube. The grooves were holding dirt and under the hand guard there was surface rust in the grooves even though six months ago I had wiped it down with CLP.

I started out with 320 grit sandpaper to take the grind marks out of the tube, it took quite a while to get the tube smooth. i followed up with 400, 600,800 and 1000 grit sandpaper. It took less time to work from the 320 grit to the 1000 grit than it took to remove the original marks with 320.

At first the oxpho blue was not covering the tube evenly so I started heating it in front of my propane heater then wiping it on tell the tube was cool. I did one third at time overlapping the application, then lightly polishing with 0000 steel wool and cleaning with alcohol. I had to repeat this process four time to get the desired effect.

I think it turned out good, definitely matches the barrel better.

Great job,
Looks fantastic. I would love to do this om my Evil Roy but I will see how wax does to keep the tube rust free under the handguard. If not then I may have to tackle this the way you did.

Nice job on the outside. Did you perchance look inside the tube? I was thinking that if the outside was that rough, then the inside may be the same. If so, could that might cause feeding issues?
Just thinking out loud.

Muddy, the inside of the tube isn't rough on my rifle. I have not had a feeding problem. I shoot about 150 rounds a week out of it and clean the mag tube about every thousand rounds or so with Hoppes then use a dry lube inside. Most of the ammo I shoot is lubed so I clean out a lot of goo but I think the goo also keeps the magazine lubed.

Thanks, Leverjc. I am going to take a look at my Evil Roy and check it out. It feeds and shoots everything that I have loaded. I haven't noticed the feed tube being rough, though I use speed loaders. Just take out follower and dump the next tube full.
