Receiver material of the rimfire lever rifles?

Post by fortyshooter » Tue Mar 02, 2021 9:14 am

Are they steel or some other material? Was wondering about that since I haven't seen one in CCH .

On the rimfire Henry lever guns I believe the receiver cover is called Zamac. Most folks seem to call it pot metal but I don't think I would go as far as to say it is that bad. There is a few guys on RimFire Central that has done some experimenting with cold blue and some liquid jewelry cleaners if I remember right and didn't get a real case colored look but made them look pretty good and definitely made them take on a different look. I did a removal of the black paint and left it the bare aluminum look and like it much better than the black orange peeled paint.Image

I like that look to Bandit just to chicken to try to do something like that as I usually end up making it worse.

Thanks for the info Bandit and Al. I was thinking a .22 carbine with the octagonal barrel and CCH would be a nice match to my centerfire collection.
Talked with Bobby Tyler and he won't touch the Rossi lever rifles for CCH work...too much mix of alloy....as in cheap steel.

The receiver and cover are made from Zamac. Think Hot Wheels.

Forty I did something similar to Bandit, I stripped the the receiver cover and barrel band. I let the cover tarnish a little then put a clear coat over it.

Gene “Sir Henry" has done some re-finishing on some of his Henrys. I like the look he has achieved.
I really should spend some time on my half a Henry to make it look a bit older.

That one I also stripped that varnish stain off, and put like ten coats of Tru oil on it.
It brought the grain out in the wood and looks ten times better to "me".

Rep, I can't remember exactly, but was a some popular paint stripper.
Then smoothed out with some 0000 steel wool.
It actually came off pretty easy.

Image[/img] Yes,
Zamac but these covers and barrel bands are tough. I stripped them down to bare metal. Heavy and machined precisely.
I went with the warm gold color.

I used Aircraft Remover spray. With a brass wire brush. You have to take the cover off the receiver though along with the barrel bands.

Removed the cover and band, stripped the black paint off both. Easy!! light sanded (600 grit) cleaned with acetone
then primed and sprayed. Good old Rustoleum rattle can.

Excellent. I did the same but sprayed it with the grey Teflon paint used on original M16 magazines. I hung it in the garage for a few months and it got very hard.
