just picked up a mares leg 22 lr. nice little firearm. taking it to the range tomorrow. only thing i dont care for is the saddle ring. is there a way to remove it without taking a hacksaw to it and risk screwing up the finish around it?

Welcome to the forum. I don't know the answer to your question but I suspect Sir Henry can give you some good information.

Welcome from Alberta...leave the ring on and get a horse and saddle, it will all make sense after that...

Im not sure which cover fits the Mares leg but one thing you could do is get a hold of Henry and ask them for the cover that fits the mares leg without the saddle ring. Sir Henry will know more like one poster mentioned. Welcome to the forum

Al's recommendation is sound .... I find it curious that Henry would attach the ring in a manner that it can't be removed without major surgery .... it would make sense to me that one should be able to unscrew the fitting attached to the rifle .... if it can't be turned easily, I would recommend calling Henry well before getting heavy handed in trying to remove it

Welcome to the forum. You have several options. The first is the cheapest and easiest and merely involves unscrewing the the loop that holds the ring. Yes it unscrews to leave a hole that will need to be filled in.
The second option is to buy a receiver cover for a Classic.

They do unscrew.

got rid of the ring. so yur telling me i can rotate this counterclockwise and it will come out? i can rotate it a bit by hand so maybe need a vicegrip.

on the off chance you may want to put it back at some point in the future, I wouldn't favor vice-grips .... rather, I'd stick a thin screwdriver through and use it as a T-handle .... here again, if you meet much resistance, I'd stop and call Henry

i might just leave it. at least the annoying ring rattle is gone. on a side note, took it to the range today. only about 30 rounds cuz i had a number of other firearms to use. but its a blast to shoot. and no hiccups, so thats a plus

I asked Henry how to order a plain cover for my mares leg and they sent me one, problem solved. I love their customer service, I own four and have had zero issues.

Most times that rattle will stop with a piece of leather tied to it. I use a piece of leather shoe or boot string, cut to about 5" and loop it around to make a tassel that hangs a bit down. This keeps the loop from touching the metal and I think its traditional method of doing this. Not my idea. Original photos show this being the case on old western guns.
Ive added saddle rings to a couple of my Marlins and done this to them. My Rossi 357 came with that leather tassel so I took the idea from that one.

You'll be sorry once you get a horse.
