Yes he takes OEM levers but that is about all I know about making them. The end product is beautiful. I should stop watching old westerns.

that makes sense to me .... I can see how modifying the OEM levers would make the project much easier/quicker

If you have ever taken an H001 apart and seen how the lever works the bolt you would be amazed at how simple everything is. But to make the lever from scratch would cost a thousand dollars.

absolutely .... I took the OEM lever out of our Big Boy Steel 44 and replaced it with a Henry optional large lever .... they have done some really nice engineering to create a simple device that can perform such a critical task

I had one lever lockup wear down and its no longer usable. It would not lock the bolt into battery all the way. Not sure why it happened.

one universal truth is given sufficient time and use any piece of equipment will eventually breakdown or wear out

I have an H001 with more than 100,000 rounds through it and it still locks up tight. The one that failed only had a few thousand through it.

question --- as one who has more experience with Henry rim fires than anyone else I know :

given the desire for a Henry 22 for plinking and paper punching

will be shot mostly from a rest

will be used to help train our grandchildren to shoot

that lends itself to having a scope mounted

not really interested in one with a brass receiver

which specific model would you recommend ?

I like the Small Game Carbine for its accuracy. You didn't say how old the grandchildren are but you might want to put a youth stock on it. Even as an adult I like the youth stock. It does have the Skinner sights which you wouldn't need if you scoped it. But young eyes might like the peeps and teaching someone to shoot iron sights first is better than teaching them to use a scope first.

I could also make an argument for the Classic, Carbine or Youth rifle too. Unless you have a specific need I would stay away from the Frontier or Golden Boy.

recommendation duly noted and appreciated .... a 22 for our 7 year old grandson was taken care of in the will of a longtime friend who passed away a few months ago .... we have two much younger ones who are growing like weeds but won't be ready for a 22 for a few more years

In that case how about the Mini Bolt? Skinner makes a sight for it.

I've looked at those .... I can see the wisdom in starting kids out with one but I have a personal aversion to single shot rifles .... my wife says I have a too many such quirks .. .. when they were much younger we gave both of our sons Ruger GP100's chambered for 357 mag and both have taken deer with them .... our oldest grandson will turn 8 in September and will be taking the hunter safety course .... for his birthday I plan to get him a Henry Big Boy Steel 357 .... he will be able to hunt with his father using bullets we have already been loading for decades .... my thought on the lever 22 was as a step to a lever 357
