Quality Golden Boy time

Went for a walk through the woods this afternoon and had to stop at my favorite tree for a little photoshoot.
Some of you may remember this gun, I refinished with Tru-oil and found some amazing color and grain under the factory poly.
Makes me smile every time I see it!

I definitely won't!
But, true story, I found a old single shot 12g in these very woods as a kid.
Still have it, been out there long enough the wood was completely rotted off and I can't make out any markings at all

Yea as a historian and 'relic hunter' I find the story about the 1873 found in Nevada interesting but In spite of all the guesses about it I don't think it has been out there more than 50 or so years - or it would have been in much worse shape.
Reason is I know people who own 'original' 1873s (as well as other vintage rifles) ,shoot them frequently and still hunt with them so it IS possible this was being used for hunting and left against the tree after a deer or elk kill and simply forgotten.
The vintage round of ammo found stuck in the stock recess is also not an indicator of anything as it could have simply been in there all along - and never discovered.
There is no doubt it has been out there a long time but not anything near what has been suggested.

Very beautiful wood on that rifle. I really like walnut stocks. No two are ever alike.

Anything is possible but the round found in the buttstock was made between 1899 - 1911 so that narrows it down.
It’s also interesting the round was found in the buttstock cleaning kit recess, like maybe someone had no idea how to load it and shoved a round in the butt a ‘la a Spencer carbine.
The fact that it was not loaded when found is odd but not unusual.
If it was used for hunting and an animal was taken it was either the last round or the owner unloaded it before setting it down.
Another thought is it was a ‘loaned’ rifle and the user, not being the owner, was irresponsible and left it.
Another could be it was a kid ‘borrowed’ the rifle from dad, shot the remaining rounds up and forgot it in the woods.
Stolen is another possibility.
Rifles left in the woods are not particularly uncommon as I have known of a few people over the years who have found one, leaning against a tree - I also know of a couple who have left them as well....
