Curious about a17hmr

Post by Vaquero » Sun May 29, 2016 6:52 pm

Been thinking about picking up one.
Torn between a Savage and the Henry.
Want to know if any of you'll have one.
Or have shot one of the Henry's.

I don't need one, just a want. I'm not sure why, I have a 22mag & a AR in 223.
Anyway how about it??

Just to throw any monkey wrench into the works, have you looked at .17 WSM? My buddy got the Savage Bmag in .17 WSM. He let me try it at the range a few months ago. 100 yds, the first five shots were very impressive in accuracy. Put my model 111 bull barrel in .223 to shame.

Ch, no hadn't considered the wsm.
Any advantage over the hmr.
I see ammo is about the same price.
I did chuckle when I read that the parent case is a nail gun blank.

The .17HMR is an accurate flat shooting round. I have a Henry in that caliber and love it.

My next Henry will likely be an .17HMR just because along with 22LR, that caliber is approved for small game firearms hunting in CT. It is the most practical choice -- but first I need to break-in my Classic H001. It's been a couple of years and it still hasn't happened, but I sure would like to go on my first squirrel hunt that Henry.

If you are hunting with it, the WSM carries a much larger punch. I has another almost 500 fps as well as a heavier bullet 20 vs 17 grains. For target shooting it means being able to reach out farther, as well as increased wind resistance. The data I saw was 100 yds, 10 mph crosswind: 1.6 in deviation with the WSM vs 3.1 in for the HMR. The WSM also has a more streamline bullet profile.

This caliber seems to be catching on. Only time will tell how popular it will become, and stay.

Buddy's son shot a 135 lb hog with the WSM earlier this year. Center mass shot. It ran about 50 ft and dropped.

I never shot or owned a 17hmr firearm but a friend of mine in Idaho shoots that caliber a lot.

PS:

There are a few ammunition links online that discuss the pros and cons of 17hmr for shooting comparisons and for hunting too.
