I'd take out my Marlin 783 in .22 WMR any day to shoot varmints. A very flat shooter and very accurate if not shooting over 150 yards or so. I'd take out my Ruger American .223 or M77 25-06 heavy barrel if long range shooting was the fare for the day.

A Henry lever action rimfire in .17 HMR would be interesting, right? I'd have a hard time not buying a single shot in .223, though, if I was looking for a "walking around varminter" rifle ;) .

does the 100 grain 308 bullet have reduced recoil over a larger 308?

There are a couple of films that I must stop and watch (if only for a little while) whenever they are shown and I stumble on them when I'm flipping channels. Quigley Down Under is one of them. I actually watched the entire film about a month ago for the umpteenth time. It includes all the elements needed to be a great movie. Never get tired of it.

back with our sons started hunting we had Ruger M77 308's cut down for them ... I know their full power big game 125 gr bullets produces less recoil than our normal 150's .... I believe that dropping down to 100/110's would reduce it even more .... just how much is hard to say because felt recoil is very subjective thing

I know 308s were top of the mid and long range accuracy world for awhile until something brighter and shinier came along.

A scoped Henry Frontier in 17HMR is the most fun I've had with any rifle. As a walking around varmint getter even with its range , using fragmenting bullets it as safe or safer than a 22lr, notorious ricochet.

Tell the truth I’ve only owned 1 bolt action rifle and that was a .308 from Montgomery Wards some ?0 years ago, still have it. I’m left handed that’s why I chose to shoot lever actions. Never did like reach around to eject with a right handed bolt never got used to it. My 3 sons, all former military, say tactical is the way to go. I kind of like the left handed Rem 700 varmint lh, but I told them I would research it.
No real input on caliber, as I have 22 mag, 25-20 and 223's for such, but
Seeing how you mentioned your lefthanded.
You won't like the AR shooting it LH, and those empties flying across in front of your face.
