Early Birthday Present

My son called and said “let’s go to grandpas and shoot some steel”. Said he’d be here at 6:00. He comes by and my daughter hopped in his truck so I get in mine. We drive out and head to the back porch. We open our gun bags and I get my 10/22 target out. He gets out the safe queen. That’s an old Stevens 22/410 over under. My grandpa dug it out of an old barn that was his brothers farm. It sat in the barn for vermin, foxes, etc., forever. When he gave it to me it was in awful shape and told me to make it new. So I tried. Used it for rabbit hunting in my younger years. Then the side selector started to fall to the lower setting when I shot the .22. I stopped shooting it because I didn’t want it to break completely. Well today it was fixed. Chris had taken it to the local smith who did the work. He handed it to me and said “Happy Birthday!” It functions flawlessly and is still the shooter that it used to be.
The wood is not original. My brother in law and I got a buttstock blank and two pieces of maple and went to work.

Patent pending. Not sure how old that makes it but I suspect it’s been on the planet longer than I. The receiver turned plum but we think it looks good.

My wife’s dad’s pasture field. After his wife passed Chris and I bought and placed the steel. Grandpa loves to shoot. He especially likes to hear that big gong hit. Hitting it with a handgun makes the old guy giggle like a school girl.

The fit of the fore arm isn’t perfect but we were kids when we did it. And my grandpa inspected it when it was done and said “not bad.” So by golly it was good enough. Still is I reckon.

Very nice. I cleaned up a couple old family guns and passed them on to the kids already, and several others will get passed down. It's nice when the kids share your passion...nice to read about one passing back UP the line.

Very nice!
I too have an old Stevens 410/22 that was my FIL's. It's pretty old, but in almost perfect condition.
Enjoy!

Always thought that was the best critter gun made. Glad your son did that for you.

"Critter gun" is a great name for those old 22/410s. As kids on the farm, we used a friend's Savage 24 in 410/22 to shoot rats down at the corn silo. Some of those corn fed rats were huge, but that gun was up to the task. Whenever one of those old Stevens or Savages come up for auction in our area, they bring a premium. Still a much sought after gun in our area.
